ugh - another ******* high fever (UPDATE)
I get to the sitter today and KJ is just resting on the sitter's chest (he is not much of a cuddle bug so I knew something was not right)
she told me he has 103.4 fever...she gave him tylenol at 4:15 and at 6:15, when I just took his temp it is now 103.3 so it only went down .1 degrees in 2 hours
he is very lethargic and just staring out into space and moaning.....
ugh, Is there anything else I can do for him?> when can I give him motrin if I was to alternate
I have a call into me ped as well...fevers freak me out
UPDATE - my poor baby did not get much sleep last night, he was moaning and tossing and turning off and on until like 3am
His fever was 100.8 when he woke up and went down to 98.9 by 4pm. But then at bed time, it was back up to 102 so I gave him another dose of motrin and hopefully, it will break by the am
thanks for all the get well vibes, love you b!tches

Re: ugh - another ******* high fever
we were battling the fever virus over here last week- first Ella, then Erik.
I find Motrin to be better at bringing down fevers. Motrin can be given every 6 hrs, Tylenol every 4 (why did KJ get it 2x in 2 hours? how much did she give him?)
Whenever my kids fevers spiked they'd get clingy, cranky and lethargic, but they bounce back once it comes down. Since his hasn't come down much, and he's so young, I'm glad you called your ped.

sorry, I meant that she gave him the tylenol only at 4:15. 6:15 was when I took his temp again. It is still 103.4. ped did not seem overly concerned as long as he is drinking his bottles and it does not get too high (104.5 or higher)
the nurse also said, if it does not break within 72 hours, to bring him in
he is so miserable, I feel so bad

Re: ugh - another ******* high fever
You can stagger motrin with Tylenol. When the boys have high fevers that aren't coming down I do Tylenol, 2 hours later Motrin. Talk to your doctor and see if you can do the same for KJ.

Fever that high, I would have started with Motrin. Watch if he is lethargic though, that I don't like.

I think I have a different definition of lethargic than my ped. When I said lethargic, the nurse said they use that term when a baby is limp, not responding, etc
KJ was just kind of staring into space, like a blank look on his face, etc

I hope he feels better soon!! I definately find motrin to take Alyssas fevers down better than Tylenol though. Tylenol never does much.

In the future I would buy a head scan thermometer so you can do it while he is sleeping as well. DD just had this same thing. My dr told me that tylenol/motrin can be given 15 min apart but every 4 hrs. I was able to kill the virus in about 4 doses. Took me less then 24 hrs. She was throwing up as well.

When Luca has a fever, I would go in and see if he is burning up or just warm. I only had to wake him to give him Motrin once, and he went right back to sleep. Poor KJ, hope he's better soon

Re: ugh - another ******* high fever
TJ gets high fevers. I alternate motrin and tylenol every 3 hours for fevers over 103, especially at night. During the day if it's under 103 I just use tylenol and if it's around 101 I will wait and see if it starts to go to give his body a break from the medicine.
Does he have a history of ear infections?

Never had one, BUT in his 9 short months, he has had the swine flu, bronchitis (or pneumonia, it was a close call on the x-ray), and had to get IV fluids due to dehydration. Poor thing has been through alot and I hate to see him so helpless.
I just went in cause he was stirring alot in his sleep. He definitely still feels warm but not noticibly warmer than before so I did not wake him. I can not give him any other meds until midnight and by then, he will hopefully be fast asleep
thanks all

You should use a rectal until they are at least 1 year, those head scan ones are good, but on when used by a profesional, you want accuracy, especially if you are concered about a high fever BTW, fever/pain reducers don;t kill a virus, it just treats the symptoms, fevers are a good thing, altough very scary ( believe me I know, my kids get 105.5 fevers-ugh). Start with motrin, 4 hrs later tylentol, ad then 2 hrs later motrin, that is the old school piggy back method we recommend in the ER, no need to take a fever down so quickly, I know it is usually a parents intention to get it down quick, but it is only an issue when it is going dangerously high (105.5-106) , you want to get it dwn, otherwise, it is just PURELY for confort measures, if my kids have 103 fevers and are themselves, they get no motrin, no need for it. Hope everyone feels better, we have been sick oer here with fever/cold for the past week.

Re: ugh - another ******* high fever
definitely give motrin over tylenol for high fevers. DS is known to get 103 fevers and motrin is the only thing that brings it down. hope he feels better!

Re: ugh - another ******* high fever
OMG poor KJ DS just had a 103 fever over the weekend. We gave him Motrin on & off and the fever was gone by the next day. KJ is so little, though, I'm not sure what is safe to give him. I hope this resolves itself quickly, Stef
