tylenol after vaccines
do you give it right away?
family and friends have told me yes, right away, and thats what i have been doing except last time nurse said don't because it will affect the vaccine 's purpose (i didnt ask, she just said it). this week will be the first time baby is getting it at night dr apt since i returned to work- close to his bed time - and mine! i am worried i wont be able to keep a 'good eye' on him to know if he needs tylenol... how often at night should i wake to check on him or should i just give it right away?

If it is bothering him, I will give it to him. But I usually will give it to him before bed. That is when they seem to bother him.. Don't give it before the vaccines or within an hour after.

My ped never wanted us to give it. Tylenol effects the immune response, and some peds believe it intereferes with the response a vaccine is INTENDED to give (produce immunity). So I never gave it, and would only give if it absolutely needed. You can google this topic and find the info about how it's best NOT to just give tylenol to give it, after a vaccine.

If dd needs it, she usually gets really whiney a few hours later. My ped always tells me the dosage in case she needs it.

I usually know within 2 hours if DS needs Tylenol, but every kid is different. Usually if I think he might need some in the middle of the night I just set my alarm and get up to check on him...but I fall back to sleep quickly, so that works well for me.

I try not to unnecessarily medicate DD so I don't give her Tylenol unless she needs it. Twice after vaccines, she was crying so much at night that she couldn't sleep so of course I gave it to her to make her comfortable. But that was at least 4 hours after the shot. DD is still really young and I wouldn't give her Tylenol (or any medicine) as a "just in case"; only if she needs it.

DS just got shots today and dr said only if he runs a slight fever. DS gets a bit fussy but I won't give Tylenol just for fussiness
