TV Over Fireplace Question

DH and I keep throwing the idea back and forth of getting a flat screen to put over the fireplace.

Our biggest concern is looking up at it. Do you feel like you are straining your necks to watch TV?

It probably seems like a strange question but we just can't seem to get a feel for it!

I know others here will say otherwise because they love the over the fireplace look, but I would hate this due to the strain on my neck.

My flatpanel in my living room is barely above eye level as it is (maybe 6 inches up tops) and I think it's way too high. I couldn't even imagine the strain I would have if it was higher.

When I have some free time I want to bring some friends over to have them lower it for me.

The only time I would put a flatpanel significantly higher is in my bedroom. In my bedroom I have a flatpanel pretty high up, tilting about 5 degrees slightly down. I find this more acceptable and comfortable in the bedroom because I watch this TV primarially laying down. With my head on the pillow I am not looking straight ahead anyways, I am really looking up on a slant. So theoretically, my bedroom TV is at eye level as well (at least from my laying on the pillow perspective). Chat Icon If I had that TV eye level to me laying down, the TV would be blocked by my feet & covers. KWIM?

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

Ours is above our fireplace and our couch is far enough away that it doesn't bother me at all. I lay down alot too and in our bedroom our tv is on our higher dresser so we look up at that one too. It doesnt both us at all.

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

Not a strange question at all....

I have a tv over the fireplace in my bedroom and find it extremey annoying that the only postion that I can lay in bed and see the tv is if Im laying facing UP....
If I turn to the side it is difficult to see the tv-i have to turn my neck to the side & up & its very uncomfortable!

A friend of mine has the tv over the fp in her living room and she hates it for this same reason.

You CAN tilt the TV down a bit, but its still annoying to look up at.

I am so happy that our contractor talked us out of
putting the TV over the FP in our den- instead we put it on the opposite wall, we almost made the same mistake 2x.

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

Our Tv is above our fireplace and I've never had that problem. ( it never even crossed my mind that there would be a problem until I read this post).

Our couch is about 10 feet away from the tv, so maybe that makes a difference.

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

We have our flat screen over our fire place, and we got a wall bracket that has a tilt, so it comes foward a little bit and we wont strain our necks, works perfectly!! You can buy the wall bracket with the TV at any appliance store.

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

For those DIY's you don't have to pay $100 - $200+ for those wall brackets either. We got ours here:

Monoprice

DH put it up 8 months ago to hold our 47" LCD and it looks great. Just make sure you catch the center of the wall studs when installing.

I am currently going back and forth with this myself.

I think I am going to mount it. My DH loves to entertain, and I think by removing our wall unit and mounting our TV above the fireplace we will free up so much space for extra seating!

I think I will get used to looking up.

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

We went back and forth with this as well. In the end, it was the only place we could put it. We placed the plasma as low as we could on the wall and our sofa is far enough away that there is no neck strain.

My one BIL put his too high and no matter where he puts the couch, it is the most uncomfortable viewing position.

I am not sure inches or feet wise but there is a picture in my album under downstairs and I think it is sufficient room compared to how our living room is set up.

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

Ours is in the process of being built

Here is the latest pic i have.
I guess it may be a strain, we put the fireplace on the ground, usually people leave a space on the bottom. And the mantle is being built between the fireplace and tv

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

The distance from our heads, when seated on the couch, to the TV is 12ft. This seems to be the sweet spot for our 47" TV. There are two other factors that make this setup work for us.

1. 99% of the time we are reclined back in our seat while watching tv. If we were forced to sit-up straight on a standard (non-reclining) couch I don't think it would be very comfortable.

2. The mount that the TV is attached to tilts. This allows us to have a direct view of the TV even though it is mounted up high.

The combination of these two factors is what makes the setup work in our small living room.

Re: TV Over Fireplace Question

like other posters...10-14 feet back is great and if you buy a tiltable mount..you are fine...

for all your wires/mounts - monoprice is the best site...

my sisters is above fire place...i installed it and depending on what your mounting it to (brick, dry wall, studs) you just need the right type of bolts
