Tulips Question
This may be a really dumb question, but I do not have a green thumb and know nothing about gardening. Can you buy tulips already in bloom to plant? Or do they just come in bulb form?

Re: Tulips Question
You can replat a tulip that is currently in bloom. Just be sure to plant the bulb deep enough.

Re: Tulips Question
YOu can plant either one.
We had bought bulbs and planted them last year around Fall........maybe September I want to say.
They are in full bloom now. They came up about a month or 2 ago. They are so pretty!
If you have them in bloom.....I'm sure you can plant them now.........at any time.

Re: Tulips Question
Just a word of caution - the OP are correct. However, if you have bunnies in your yard, during the fall and winter, they will dig up the bulbs and eat them. I had that happen to me, so I bought daffodils instead and the bunnies haven't gone anyway near my flower garden.

I have more of a problem with bunnies eating the buds & squirrels digging up the bulbs, but either way, daffodils are easier, except that some of mine didn't come back.
Right now is sort of the end of tulip season though, so I am not sure if it would really be worth it to plant them no, but say if you were having a party or selling your house & you want it to look good right now & & don't care if it lasts, then I think that would be fine.

Re: Tulips Question
I just planted tulips last weekend bc I got the bulbs cheap, and I wanted them for next year. They are already dying. It is the end of the season for them.

Re: Tulips Question
Squirrels and rabbits are drawn to the smell of freshly turned soil and will dig to find out what's underneath. Daffodils don't taste good to them, so they won't eat those.
I planted about 270 tulips, daffodils, and crocus last fall and tried something new. I didn't put chicken wire in the ground to prevent them from digging the bulbs. However, I did put it on top of the ground and weighed it down with big rocks and planters.
After two weeks, I took the chicken wire up and put a thick layer of mulch down. I have both squirrels and rabbits in my yard, and they didn't touch any of it. They've all been blooming for weeks now and they haven't eaten any flowers.
I don't know if I just got lucky or not, but the chances of the digging them up after the first season are slimmer, I believe. Then again, I do feed the squirrels in the winter so maybe they just aren't hurting for food.
Sorry to go on and on, but I love spring bulbs.

Re: Tulips Question
I planted some already in bloom about a month ago - they are just peeking now. I bought them, b/c I planted bulbs the first week of december and thought I was too late...but when I was planting the new ones, I found the bulbs just starting to come up.
not sure if this helped my bulbs from not being eaten, but I put leftover mulch over them as soon as I planted them (since I was afraid they would go into shock since it was already cold in december)

Re: Tulips Question
You know whats funny, we have a ton of rabbits and squirrels, and to our surprise, they didnt dig any of our bulbs.
BUT.....the crocus we have planted........poor things dont have a chance. I assume its the rabbits chewing the grass/leaves to the point where it doesnt have a chance to grow a flower........ Too bad, b/c we were really looking forward to them........

Ohh, this makes sense. B/c we did this too.......and ours did not get dug up either........and the animals by us always have a "mission".

We were warned about this too and were told by the flower shop to put down Blood Meal after planting the bulbs in the fall. It STINKS but it worked -- the squirrels didn't touch them.
