Tues- Update on my FIL.
Thank you so much everyone for your thoughts and prayers. They definitely are working. I had a drs appointment at 8am this morning and went straight to the hospital from there. I got there at 8:45 and signed in. When asked my relationship to the patient I lied and said I was his daughter (left out the IL part) because I knew it was the only way they'd let me in.
No one could've prepared me for what I saw. He had the breathing tube in and he looked so awful--- I really thought he was minutes away from dying. I broke down in hysterics and stayed with him for almost an hour talking to him (b/c they swore he could hear me even though he wouldn't respond) and telling him how much i/we love him and how much we need him to come home and how worried and scared everyone is. Then I told him about the weather and a bunch of other stuff and then that mom would be back later.
DH called as I just left the hospital and was sobbing uncontrolably (sp?) and I had to explain to him all that had just taken place. Then my mom called and said she was taking my grandma to the hospital for an xray b/c we think she has pneumonia. So I headed to my MILs house and spent the day w/ her. We went back up to the hospital at noon and stayed there until almost 7:30. Ready for this. MY FIL IS OK!!! We had to keep him relaxed and talk to him for an hour while they took him slowly off sedation and then they took the tube out. My MIL and I fed him dinner and he had visitors and he seems great. This has been such a trying day but w/ such a great outcome!!!
At one point he wrote on my MILs hand "D" "Y" and she asked if he wanted to know what day it was. I said "No, he thinks he's dying" and he nodded his head in agreement w/ me. He thought we were a dream and that we were there to let him know that he was dying.  I'm so glad he's ok now though- it's going to be a tough road but I think he can do it!!!!

keep being positive. It is so scary coming off the vent. Say positive things to him, joke around with him and tell him how much you love him. It helps.

Ii called him first thing this morning. I guess the nurses and staff have been filling him in on the 24 hours that he lost. He started crying when he heard it was me and kept thanking me, telling me how all he kept hearing about was how wonderful i was (and his wife was) and how it's so easily seen how much we love him. It was really nice to hear his voice- he sounded so good but says he still feels very weak and tired. They got him out of bed today and let him sit in a chair and they were going to walk him to the bathroom and a physical therapist was supposed to come up later on this morning.
I'm picking up DH at Islip at 6:15 when his plane lands and we're going straight up to Stony Brook to see his dad. He sounded so happy when I told him we'd be up later on this afternoon.
I feel bad for my trick or treaters though- i bought tons of candy and i won't be home to give any of it out.

So happy to hear this. Leave the bowl of candy outside with a note to the trick or treaters to help themselves and to be fair to others who come afterwards.
May your FIL make a complete recovery!!!
