Tubes in ears and scheduling of surgery
My son is 2.5 and has a speech delay. I took him to an ENT, Dr. Gargano, and he diagnosed him with a mild hearing loss and fluid in his right ear. He suggested that my son get tubes in his ears. I’m not happy about the tubes but I would do anything possible to help him with his speech. He is currently going to speech therapy once a week.
The next available date for the surgery is the end of May. I would rather get the show on the road and get the tubes in this month. Is this is average wait time for an ear tubes surgery? I was thinking of getting a second opinion or find a doctor with a faster surgery schedule. I would love to get something sooner so my son can get the fluid out and hopefully improve his speech.

I want to say that my son's surgery was schedule in less than 2 weeks...that seems like an EXCESSIVE amount of time...I would go for a second opinion.
We used Dr. Lee Smith from Cohens Childrens Medical Center. He also removed my 2 older boys tonsils and adnoids.

I see dr. Campbell (he is in the same office)! My dd had hearing loss and wasn't speaking clearly. She had tubes out in at 17 months and her speech was instantly clearer. It was a miracle surgery or her. I think we had to wait bout 4-6 weeks for a date. We choose lij for her surgrey. I think there was a shorter wait time for good sam.

My DS just had tubes done last Friday. We go to Dr. Craig Litman and it was about 3.5 weeks from the day we decided to do the surgery to the day it was done. I think it just depends on your doctor's schedule... we were told that our doctor typically schedules about 4 weeks ahead.

I was able to have an appointment in 5 days if i wanted. I chose to have one scheduled three weeks later. DD surgery is scheduled 4/9.

We used Dr.Litman in port jefferson and I want to say we had a appt for the procdure in about 2 1/2- 3 weeks. I would go for a 2nd opinion..

Tubes were no recovery at all. Totally fine as soon as out of surgery.
For the tonsils, the first few days they were fine, then I would say around day 4 or 5 is when they started with the pain. Its when the wound "crusts" over that is really painful for them.

Thanks for all of the replies. I called LIJ (Cohen's Hospital) today and Dr. Lee is booked until June! I made an appointment with Dr. Shikowitz for April. Mrs. Flatbread, do you mind sharing the name of the doctor that you went to? I'll will also look into the doctor in Port Jeff, thank you. It is just so frustrating to figure all of this out. I also feel like our son's pediatrician is so passive and no help at all.

We used Dr Mendelsohn and as soon as he knew we needed tubes, we scheduled the surgery, preop, etc. and it was done..DD fortunately did not have hearing loss or fluid issues, just chronic ear infections (think two weeks on meds, one week off, and then on again) and knock on wood, they have done WONDERS...I hope the same goes for your DC
