TTC and not being at your ideal weight...

Has anyone felt this way? I am worried that once I conceive (God willing) that I will never get to an ideal weight again. Is this completely shallow to feel? I have just gained a lot of weight in the past few years and I am terribly afraid of issues during pregnancy too. Anyone have any insight for me?

It couldn't hurt to try to start eating healthier and moderately exercising while ttc. That's what I've been doing and I'm actually noticing results since its taking us longer to conceive than I had thought it would (going on 5 months). Good luck to you! Chat Icon

Its not shallow at all... i think its very natural for how we feel about our 'superficial' selves to directly effect how we feel in other ways. I think if you arent happy with yourself then anytime is the right time to start taking steps to make you feel better.

This is what I have been doing for a month now, and I'm already down a pant size. We've been trying for 1 year on Saturday, and still no true BFP. My dr did say that weight plays a big part in ttcing.

ITA. And if you remain healthy during pregnany, it will be easier to get back to prebaby body after.

Re: TTC and not being at your ideal weight...

i do not think you are shallow at all..

but i do think that before you try to ttc you should now your body will change..it can be a difficult thing for some people to see..sometimes u bounce right back, sometimes it takes extra work

i only say this so it would not be a shock,kwim..some ain 20 some 80

imo every single pound, pain, ache is worth all of it..it si life growing inside you

but it could be a issue for some and if u r not ready to lose the figure, maybe never definite, then thats ok too

you should do what is best for you and your dh..if u feel thetime is right go for it

I like the other posters' advice: even though you are ttc now, there is no reason to wait to try to get in shape. Start watching what you eat and maybe just walking a few times a week. It may actually improve your chances of conceiving.

This!!
I totally understadn the fear of your body changing but now is as good a time as any to start eating healthy and moving more. It's good for you and anything good for you is good for a future baby! Take care of you first!

Re: TTC and not being at your ideal weight...

this is what I have learned ....

I was overweight when we began TTC in 8/09. I tortured myself, worrying that I would gain a ton of weight and I would look awful and feel awful and it would be an awful pregnancy and I would have trouble conceiving.

Low and behold, we got a BFP cycle 1 Chat Icon and now have an almost 20month old son Chat Icon .

it was the PERFECT pregnancy. I gained 16ish lbs and had not 1 hiccup along the way.

At 2 weeks PP, I was down 31 lbs Chat Icon I still call DS my best diet yet!

We are TTC now and again I am concerned about my weight but you know what, waiting until I lose all the weight is never going to happen. Be as healthy as you can be, eat right, exercise and you will be fine.

I have noticed that for the most part, women who are overweight to begin with gain less. Our bodies know what to do, we dont need to extra lbs like thin or underweight women do.

Stress will only lead to problems TTC so just go with it Chat Icon

Wow thank you all for your advice and kind words. It's nice to get insight from other people. It's nice to get an outsiders point of view.
I am prepared that my entire body and life is going to change and I know it's going to be so worth it. I am super scared though, but I guess anything scary, is worth it.

You can TTC and start to eat better and work out now. I have a horrible self-image. When I was pg I was always worried about the scale and how I looked. I didn't want people to come see the baby after I had DC cause I didn't want them to see how big I was. Now 8 months pp - I am 9lb under my pre-bfp weight. I dropped all of the prego weight within 2 months and then I just started working on loosing more.
We are not TTC yet but still even though I weigh less - I want to loose 10 more and I still have a fear about the weight I will gain if I get another BFP
It is very natural to feel that way - good luck to you!

Re: TTC and not being at your ideal weight...

I've had a similar post because I was worried about being heavy and TTC. The advice I recieved was to do both at the same time because you don't know how long either will take. I'm down 5 lbs and on to month 2 TTC. So, the ladies here were right!

Makes total sense. We'll see what happens for sure. I am not TTC just yet, soon but not yet. So I guess that gives me time to get my butt into some kind of shape.

Re: TTC and not being at your ideal weight...

i am about 12lbs heavier than what i would like to be before pregnancy. After a few months of being unsucessful i've decided that weight can come off, its not the most important thing. ill just have to work harder on maternity leave.

I just started reading The Fertility Diet byJorge Chavarro. I was flipping through it at barnes and noble and decided to buy it. I literally just started it so I can't give any recommendation as of yet but if you want to check that out.

eat healthy, and low stress exercise......

if you keep putting off ttc then you may never feel your ideal weight. weight does affect ability to ttc.

Re: TTC and not being at your ideal weight...

I was at my heaviest weight when TTC #1. I got pregnant right away and gained a lot more weight. I lost it all pretty quickly, but was still much heavier than I had ever been. Finally, when DS was about 18 months, I decided to work on myself. I lost 35 lbs and kept it off until TTC #2. I worry about gaining a lot of weight again with this pregnancy, but I know I'm in a healthier place now and will be motivated to get back to where I was.

Re: TTC and not being at your ideal weight...

Totally not shallow to think that way!
I have 1 DD who is 18 mos. I was at my heaviest when I got pregnant with her. I gained around 45 lbs with that pregnancy. I saw #'s on the scale I never thought I would see...it was horrifying but I was pregnant so you just are at peace with it knowing what's going on inside of you.
I delivered in summer and was a swollen mess. I retained so much water. It took a full 2 weeks for my swelling to go down after delivery (I swelled up even more while in labor from all the fluids being pumped into me thru IV...I looked like Shrek when I gave birth...pics of me I feel like I am unrecognizable!). Once those 2 weeks passed...the weight literally fell off me. I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight at my 6 week check up...which even though that was the heaviest I had ever been - after being prego you feel so amazing to be back at that weight so soon. I watched what I ate...really didn't exercise much at all b/c with new baby I didn't make the time and it was summer and a hot one so way too hot to take baby out for long walks right away. I probably lost another 10 lbs over the next month or so.

So please don't feel discouraged...
I am now prego with #2 and unfortunately up to that heaviest weight again when I got pregnant b/c I gained weight from a pregnancy a few mos ago that ended in a miscarriage. So I am starting out this pregnancy very heavy again.
