Tree Removal
Anyone have any experience with removing a tree from their property? Will the town remove it for free? We have an ol, large tree infront of our house and the roots are starting to lift up some of the sidewalk. TIA

Re: Tree Removal
If it is on the side of the sidewalk closer to the street, then I think you have a shot at the town removing it. If it is on your side of the sidewalk, I think it's your responsibility - but it could depend on the town you live in.
A neighbor of ours was dealing with a dying tree that was definitely on town property dropping limbs on his cars. He put in multiple requests for it to be removed and the town said they would get to it, but ultimately he had it taken down himself this spring.

Re: Tree Removal
We're in Town of Hempstead. Earlier this summer we had a tree on the curb strip that was dying. We had to write them a letter requesting they take it down and then they came to inspect the tree. They agreed it needed to come down. We had to pay $350 to have it removed, but our landscaper told us it would be $1000+ to do it privately. They said that they will be coming to inspect the sidewalk and if the tree roots damaged it or lifted it we are responsible for repairing it.
If it's not dying, they won't remove it. You can apply for a permit to do it privately.
Sidewalk repairs are the homeowner responsibility - at least in Town of Hempstead.

Re: Tree Removal
Where is the tree?
If it's in your yard you will be responsible for it.
You may also need a permit depending on your township.

This. We just had 2 trees removed from the front of our property. The roots had lifted the sidewalk and were affecting our sewer system. We used A1 All County Tree Service in Mineola and paid about $300/tree.

Re: Tree Removal
thanks ladies. the tree is on the strip towards the street, not on our front lawn. I can deal with a few hundred dollars, just not thousands ! I know we are responsible for the sidewalk though that will need to be repaired.
