Traveling with kids & Zika
I'm not pregnant.... But a vacation that we have booked (Aruba) now has Zika spread by mosquitos. I booked the flight through JetBlue & could rebook it to another sunny location... Would you guys go to a spot with Zika with your kids? I don't mind using industrial DEET but I am mosquito food! Trying to make a decision & want to hear all opinions!

I'd give my pediatrician a call first, but I'm inclined to say yes id still go if she gave me the ok . Im PG so it was a ckcern of mine and from all the research I 've done to date the real danger is to the fetus of pregnant women or women who are TTC in the next month or two. It sounded like the effects of Zika on a normal healthy person are very minimal if any. Of course there are also extreme and rare cases as well.

No, I wouldn't. I get eaten alive just stepping outside by mosquitos and they're so itchy. My DD gets biten too. I wouldn't risk it.

Traveling with kids & Zika
I'm not sure. I guess it depends on where you are staying, and if they have a lot of mosquitos. We booked a trip to Puerto Rico which has a Zika epidemic there! I booked it only about a week out, THEN realized they have Zika. I was really close to cancelling, but researched a bit, and the mosquitos in the part we were on aren't on the beaches. I called the hotel to ask what their procedures were, and if they spray. They did, and they had bug spray in the lobby to use if we needed to. We did not see a single mosquito the entire trip. So I'm glad we didn't cancel!

I just got back from Puerto Rico this past weekend on a girls trip and while we brought our own bug spray, the resort had it as well. We also didn't have any issues with mosquitoes or bugs so hopefully that is reassuring. As for kiddies, defer to your ped.

I'd ask the ped but my understanding is it's a mild illness. I don't know how old your kids are but if they aren't babies and you give them 5 coats of DEET, I'd go.

ITA - unless you plan on ttc, i would still go i just returned from Aruba...there was not a mosquito in sight my entire trip. I would load up on the bug spray to be safe

I wouldn't but I'm always paranoid about this type of thing. I agree with an above poster, I would at least get my ped's take on it. My other thought is I'd wonder just how much insecticide they're spraying there to keep them at bay.
The one pro about Aruba is that it's windy (from what I hear, never been) so I would think that might help keep mosquitoes away. We have a trip booked to Nevis but it's a while from now . . . Wondering what the situation is there. Ugh.

Yep I would and am this year. I can't be paranoid about everything and this is something I could get easily sitting in my backyard.

Re: Traveling with kids & Zika
We were there in March and have been going every year. I actually don't find the island where we stay buggy at all and have never been bitten by a mosquito. I should add I usually get bites all summer long. My boys were fine too. You make the final decision, but do some research, call the hotel and talk to your ped.

I would cancel/rebook another location. I don't think we know enough about the Zika virus yet to know that you'd be safe even if you were infected...esp with children.

I would think the constant tradewinds there would be the reason the mosquitoes stay at bay

Did they come out with a new warning or something? Why would anyone who isn't pregnant be concerned. If you or your kids get zika it's very mild and you might not even have symptoms.

...because who wants to get Zika on vacation? I certainly wouldn't! You have no idea if they would have a mild or a major reaction, each person is different. I just read a blog post about a woman that contracted it, and it wasn't so mild for her (but not deadly either). Plus, it can lead to guilliam barre syndrome (rare but still the potential), and I really think they have no idea of the long term effects on ANYONE right now to be honest.

Traveling with kids & Zika
I think Zika is supposed to spread to our area by summer ( I know they are spraying for mosquitoes in Suffolk to prevent it so that should tell you something). If it does spread here, I'm not spending my entire summer indoors. We have a vacation booked for the Caribbean and we are not changing it. It seems like no matter where you go there is a concern of some sort, most of which are also concerns right here at home anyway. Zika has not proven to be dangerous to anyone other than pregnant women or women looking to get pregnant during or shortly after their trip, and its dangerous to the baby not the mom. If I had a newborn or very young child, I might reconsider. My DS is 11 and as big as me. Most of these islands have a breeze which keeps the mosquitoes at bay when you're near the water. I just feel if we overreact to things like this we'd never get to experience anything so I weigh the pros and cons and right now it is not a big deal to me. I read an article that of the people who are bitten by mosquitoes that carry Zika, only 20% of people get sick and an overwhelming majority is so minor that they don't even realize they have it. Pretty small odds. If new information comes out before our trip I will reevaluate.

Which is even scarier for those that are pregnant or becoming pregnant. They can be exposed, and show no symptoms, and then their baby is at risk. Obviously doesn't apply in the OP's situation though

You probably have more of a chance of getting into a car accident on vacation than catching Zika...

I just feel like no matter where you go, or even where you live, there is always something to be concerned about. This is just in the news lately so its a big deal but Zika has been around since the 1940's. We live where Zika is headed and our mosquitoes already carry West Nile, the ticks can give you Lyme, etc. I just think you need to put it in perspective and make an informed decision.

Traveling with kids & Zika
Unless you want to cut out travel to all of the Caribbean, Central and South America for the foreseeable future, I would still go. We have a trip scheduled for August and while we will use lots of bug spray I am not going to get paranoid about it. Likely by August it will be all over the US as well. We happened to be vacationing in Mexico the week swine flu broke out in full force and we rushed home and were all stressed out. That is the last time I will overreact to media hype. I say since you are not pregnant and your children are not small infants you should go and enjoy!
