Re: Traveling on a plane w/ a Newborn
Posted by Ever-After
I was just thinking about this kinda thing today actually. But my question was how much the baby is CHARGED to go on an airplane. I want to visit my family OOS next Christmas (when DD will be around 9-10 months old). But I just cannot imagine spending $300+ on her ticket on top of me & Dh's. She's a baby, kwim? It would just be too much and we would have to just drive the 3 day trip instead (ugh). I don't mean to 'crash' this thread, but does anybody happen to know that? If babies or kids are charged the same as adults???
Great question! I am almost positive (someone pls correct me if I am wrong) that babies don't get charged--they don't have their own seat, kwim? I could be wrong though, but this is what I thought!

that's what i would assume too, but I'm not sure. It would be wrong to charge full price for a baby.

If they don't have their own seat, there is no charge. If they do, then there is but IDK if it is discounted (I somehow doubt it is lol)? That is one of our concerns too - more $$ for a 3rd ticket, cuz we're not holding a baby on our laps for 5 hours, and it's safer to have them in the car seat.

yeah, I kinda wonder about that too. They're allowed to sit on your lap the whole time? Even during take off and landing when you're supposed to be buckled in? There's no way I would be willing to pay full price though.

Kids fly free (I think you have to pay the taxes but I am not sure) if they are under 2 and you want to hold them in your lap.

Re: Traveling on a plane w/ a Newborn
We didn't travel with DS when he was that age but in hindsight, that would probably have been the easiest age. They can sleep anywhere at that age and they just need BM/formula. Super easy.
You could just gate check the snap n go and the car seat when you get to the plane. the car seat does not fold up..i think that is what you are asking.

I did some research on this because I have to fly with an infant alone. If they sit on your lap you don't pay. On most domestic carriers you can't get a discounted seat (ticket) for an infant for domestic air travel. If your plane isn't full they will let you switch to a row that has an empty seat in which case you would be able to bring your car seat and have the baby sit there, but this is only if the plane isn't full. If you are flying internationally MOST airlines will let you buy a discounted ticket. I think it's anywhere from 10%-50% of full price.
Hope this helps!

Re: Traveling on a plane w/ a Newborn
I have flown regularly from the UK to NYC with my kids, starting when they were 4 months old, just recently I flew on my own with my 4 year old son and my daughter who was just 5 months. When I have flown with infants, the charge was alwasy 10% of the regular fare plus the the taxes, and you can usually bring a bag, pushchair & car seat. I have personally never seen anyone with a kid in a car seat on a flight, and my kids have always sat my laps when they were babies. My kids never had any problems with the change of air pressure in the cabin, on take off or landing, but that could just be us! Oh, also, you may be able to check in an extra bag with an infant ticket. Good luck!
