Thank you! Judging by some of the follow-up posts people either live in very small clean areas surrounded by filthy ones or they just don't notice it.

The filth seems to be everywhere. Port Jefferson, Coram, Hauppauge, Smithtown, Islip, Commack, Selden, Centereach, Shirley - the list goes on and on.

Even my six year old daughter whom we've taught not to take her surroundings for granted notices people littering.

"Look daddy - that person just dumped a bag out of his car. A litterbug!"

"Yes honey, they are."







I agree that littering is terrible- and we shouldn't do it and we should teach our children not to- HOWEVER, I grew up in SMithtown and I have to say that it was not a "dirty" place to live by far! It was cleaned often- and we did not have litter all over our streets.

Littering happens everywhere unfortunately, NOT just on LI

Also, I think the people taht do the littering don't live in those areas... why would you throw a bag of garbage out of a window in front of your own home? In your town????

At supermarkets, people probably feel that people are paid to clean this up... people are paid to do the work. (Rationalizing this, I always put my cart away bc I am afraid aone will hit MY car and I am trying to set an example...)

Ok, I agree with the Switzerland remark, lol, and you can add Germany to the list... OMG, I was in paradise there... except for the spray painted walls in Frankfurt, but overall it was clean... ok, IMMACULATE...

But is it LI'ers or people in general?

TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!! next time you're at a red light, look around you on the ground. millions of cigarette buts and trash it's SO DISGUSTING! and I find it to be the absolute WORST getting off an exit ramp of a highway

I've noticed this more through winter and early spring. It's like sanitation is sleeping, as long as the weather isn't great. As long as they're not mowing the grass, it seems the garbage stays where it is too.

Look again in 2 months, I think you'll see a lot of the more well traveled roads are better than they are now.

There are better areas and worse areas. It all depends. You can't compare the Northern State Parkway with Sunrise Highway - they are drastically different.

I think it absolutely could be better and pisses me off to no end when I see people empty their ashtrays on the road or throw plastic wrappers and such out their windows. But I could definitely be much much worse.

My DH and I notice this as well when we come home to LI from GA. Compared to, it is dirtier (but mainly on the highways and so forth). Some people just don't care about their home and it's sad (but that is everywhere). I understand where the OP came from. I don't think it was a personal attack, but a general observation.

I do also agree the people littering are probably not from that area/town so they feel it's ok to litter there sad...

I am very aware of the trash that surrounds NYC/LI - I think its the OCD in me and yes I do feel like it is getting worse rather than better...

I NEVER understood how people could throw trash out the windows of their cars or on the street while walking...the first thought that comes into my head is - "They must live like pigs in their house!"

How HARD is it to put in the trash or keep it in your car until you can get to a trash can???

I agree! The litter condition on the Sunrise overpass on Rt112 was soo bad a year back, I would go out there on Sunday mornings and clean it myself. I was embarrassed to have family come to my house and see the conditions of my neighborhood. Don't you know as I was raking up coffee cups, used liquour bottles and even misc. drug items, some idiot threw an empty coffe cup at me. Too bad I didn't toss a Snapple bottle at his brand new SUV.

Now that I'm selling, I gave up trying. If people want to be slobs, I can't change that

Highways-I completely agree. Sunrise, Vets, Old COuntry Road, Peninsula Blvd-more so by the park areas than by the houses towards 5 Towns...train stations. ANyplace that brings people that don't live there...they just don't care... Supermarket lots... people are from there, don't live there, don't have to look at it on there lawn, they don't care... It's disgusting and I will never be the example for my children to let them think it's ok to do this. The carts annoy me as the roll down the parking lot headed straight for my car... I was well aware after all this last night of my surroundings. I didn't hit trash until I hit Peninsula-and I mean any trash otehr than branches... I did see a bunch of people sweeping up after last nights rain... I did see some man traveling east on Sunrise throw garbage out the window as he left the Rosedale border... but as far as driving down residiential areas, I did not see a problem. Now on the Cross Island in Bellrose was a completely different senario...

Cops need to start ticketing-just like speeding... See how fast it will stop!

I dont understand why people would want to litter in their communities - wherever they may live. I was walking down the street the other day and this woman in front of me just spat her gum out on the ground. UGH Why would she want to do that - wouldnt she be ****** if she stepped in someone elses gum?

In addition to teaching my child not to litter, I will be sure to teach him not to make sweeping deragatory generalizations specific to a geographic area.
I have been all over the US, there is A LOT dirtier places than LI and some of those places have a LOT less people.

Sidebar- I think places look dirtier at the start of spring. The grass, trees, flowers etc are dead...don't know just an overall feel.

I have to agree, sorry. This island is filthy. I think about it all the time when I drive around. There are very few places I go and don't see garbage all over the roads. And I don't think this is an "I hate LI" statement, I think this is an "I hate people who litter on the island" statement.

Think twice before tossing that next cigarette butt, fast food wrapper, coffee cup, napkin or other piece of trash out of the car window.

Because officials at the New York State Department of Transportation said it cost approximately $2.2 million to clean up all the trash tossed onto state roads on Long Island in 2006.

Guess who footed the bill? Yup. You, the taxpayer.

This week, in an effort to make drivers more aware of how much that discarded napkin really costs, state transportation officials are sponsoring "CLEAN Week '07." CLEAN stands for Create a Long Island Environmentally Aesthetic and Neat.

The title may be unwieldy - and a bit of a stretch. Then again, so is all the garbage. Highway debris and litter not only have an affect on aesthetics, dirtying the roads, but they can be dangerous as well.

Besides being an eyesore, larger pieces of garbage -- such as discarded trash bags, bottles, mattresses -- can lead to accidents and injuries. Smaller pieces of trash, such as discarded coffee cups, can becoming breeding grounds for disease, carrying mosquitoes. Trash can also cause fires.

In conjunction with Earth Week, maintenance crews will be out in force this week cleaning trash from state roadways. The "CLEAN Week" initiative will be coordinated with law enforcement agencies, who will be ticketing offenders, as well as with construction contractors, Adopt-A-Highway and Sponsor-A-Highway groups. The American Red Cross will utilize their Community Service Patrol, compromised of court-mandated service workers, to help pick up litter.

The hope is that motorists will get the message and stop littering.

Thanks for the post greenfreak. Apparently there will be a story on the news tonight as well. Not being from around here I am not sure if the "clean-up" effort is something new or something that happens from time to time.

I wouldn't say that its ALL of LI...but I must say that I was walking over the weekend and all over the lawn of a near by CVS was trash everywhere! Some people just don't care and it's sad
