Transition to milk & constipation

We started transitioning DD (12 months) over to whole milk about 3-3.5 weeks ago. We started off replacing 1oz of formula w/ milk and then each day after, replacing another oz until she was only on whole milk. She started getting constipated during the transition so we decided to slow it down and we also cut 1-2 bottles out of her day. She's been on 4oz of formula & 2oz of milk (same bottle) for about 2 weeks and the constipation is still pretty bad. I'm waiting to hear back from her ped but I have a feeling she may have an intolerance.

Anyone else have this issue? What milk did you end up giving to your child?

She has eaten cheese and yogurt and I don't think it's given her this same reaction but it's hard to tell.

ETA: She had no issues while on formula or breast milk.

DD is like that.
I was told too much iron & to cut milk with water & take it easy on rest of dairy.
What worked was figs, raisins, and fiber in her diet.

Does she drink water? I give my son water in a straw cup throughout the day and it helps him go. Also he eats a lot of fruit which helps.

I would also make sure he doesn't drink too much milk. You should not be giving as much milk as formula. Milk is about the calcium and fats now not real nutrition. The bulk of nutrition should be food. I think when we make the tradition we as so used to the ounces of formula so we keep going with that amount of milk.

Yes I've had this issue with DD. It's heartbreaking when you see them in so much pain. I gave her prune juice and it helped a lot(about 2 oz). Eventually her body adjusted and she is fine.

She did say above that she cut 1-2 bottles from her day, so she isn't giving as much milk as formula.

My DD has issues with constipation already. My pediatrician recommended Almond Milk instead.

Side note though: She also knows I am a vegetarian and don't use milk in our house, so that probably influenced that recommendation.

Re: Transition to milk & constipation

This happened with my son. As soon as we started giving milk, even in minimal amounts, he started to get constipated...so the point where he would scream whenever he had to go...it was heartbraking.

The doctor initially recommended prune juice...we tried mixing in with the milk, but didnt see much of an improvement.

We went back to the doctor and he recommended giving him some miralax...about a cap full a day. This helped, but i really didnt feel confortable giving him everyday, so when i began skipping...he started getting constipated again.

I dedided to go back to the doctor and saw another pediatrician within the practice and she said I should switch to 2%. We switched and no more constipation...
