Transition lenses or no?
I'm preparing myself to get DS's first pair of glasses (almost 1 year). My insurance covers the glasses but not transitions. those are $100 extra. is it worth it? one of my friends said no because it takes too long to go back to normal once you're inside and over time it gets worse.

Re: Transition lenses or no?
We did not do transitions on any of DD's glasses. Also we made the mistake of getting her first pair at the Eye Dr's office and paid over $300. Since then we have done Costco and have only spent $100 total

Re: Transition lenses or no?
I am not sure whether I would get them for a child but I hated the idea for years and then I got them with my last pair of glasses. The only thing I do not like is that I am not crazy about how this pair of glasses looks when the lenses go dark. The newer transitions lenses change very quickly, not like the ones my parents had years ago. It is really nice not to have to reach into my bag to switch to sunglasses the minute I step out into bright light. You mentioned that over time the problem with the lenses changing too slowly gets worse. I didn't know that but I would not think that a child would have the same glasses for a long enough time for that to happen. I have had these for a year now and I never noticed a difference. I hope to find a new pair of glasses within the next few weeks and I will probably do transitions again. Sorry I can't be more help about whether to get them for a child.

we initially made that mistake! we charged $350 and when we got home called and canceled the order. i called my insurance carrier and found places that take my insurance.
my FIL told me to go to costco. i wasnt sure if the quality was good. you think so?

Re: Transition lenses or no?
I work for an eye doc, we recc polycarbonate and transition lenses for kids. Glasses attract more sun to the eyes...yrs and yrs of wear could damage the eye. Polycarbonate is a shatter proof lense. HTH
ETA.Costco is great! All places send there lenses out to be made somewhere else, most of the time the same place! Costco can be using the same manufactor of a mom n pop shop, pearl vision, etc. I'd totally use costco.

I have found that Costco is great. We have had NO issues. They were still cheaper than the places that took our insurance. DD's favorite frames came from there also I am not even a member, but my mom is and we just use her card.

Re: Transition lenses or no?
My BFF swears by her DS' transition lens'. Not that kids wear sunglasses all that often, but as someone who wears glasses it SUCKS not to be able to wear sunglasses. If you don't go that route he can always wear a cap on sunny days, Ryan does that more than he wears sunglasses anyway.
Lol! Sorry I'm no help!
