Trampoline

Yay or nay???
When we moved to our new house the first thing my girls asked for was a trampoline. I told them we would talk about it next year. They haven’t brought it up again so they will be shocked when they see it.
I’m just really concerned they will get hurt. My girls are 11, 8 and 5. Is it really dangerous?

Re: Trampoline

Yes
In fact your home owner's insurance can drop you if they find out you have one. (not that they would, but that goes to show you how dangerous they are)

Even the AAP warns against it.

I saw a special report once on just how dangerous it is- especially for younger kids. Their bones break a lot easier at a young age (they don't withstand the forces an adults bones do) and their growth plates can get fractured. It can cause a lot of problems.
And that was mild compared to some of the other injuries they were talking about..... Chat Icon

I would avoid it at all costs to be honest.
Not worth it.

My kids have had one for several years. They absolutely love it. They’re 15, 13, and 11 now and they still use it (even my 15 year old son). No one has ever gotten hurt on it in the 6 years it’s been in my yard. It’s just like a swimming pool in terms of homeowners insurance, you pay a little more “in case”.

Re: Trampoline

I'm not a fan, but a neighbor has one and the kids love it. As long as you are responsible and always supervising. We have a pool so I'm always on top of that when the kids and their friends are around. Even with all the kids being good swimmers. Can't have another responsibility. LOL!
We have the pool of the block and other friends have the trampoline and zipline.

Personally, I hate them and it drives me nuts when I seen small children on them. There is published data on how dangerous they are for young kids but I don't know a single parent (besides me) who doesn't toss their toddlers right onto them.

Your kids are older so if they are willing to accept the risk of getting hurt I could see getting it. It's still a no for me but I understand how it might be hard to talk an older child out of it.

My nieces have a trampoline and my kids play on it. We also go to Sky Zone. We have never had an issue (knock on wood). But, be prepared for homeowners to potentially drop you if they find out. So I would call first.

This.
It doesn't matter how careful you are- you can't supervise a child falling the wrong way and breaking a bone or fracturing a growth plate.
That all comes down to landing the wrong way and again before age 5 or 6 their bones are much more fragile- so I don't see how supervising can prevent that.

Not worth it to me when there are 100 other things they can play with.

But it's especially bad for toddlers:
"As it turns out, small children were not designed to withstand strong forces. This includes falling from any significant height, which is essentially the objective of playing on a trampoline. As such, trampolines are not ideal places for little kids.
Kids under six just shouldn’t be on trampolines, period. Let their little bones (and their sense of coordination) develop a little more before you put them up there."

As I'm sure you've figured out, Trampolines are very polarizing. They scare the crap out of me, but damn are they fun. It's really the basic parenting risk assessment - Do I let me kids take a risk for some fun/life experience?

In general, I'm all for taking some risk for kids to learn and play, but to me a trampoline is a little too much risk because of it's strong potential to be used improperly. If one kid at a time is on it, and they're older (over 6 or 7) then the risk is some what lower, and I wouldn't be too worried. But I see people all the time who put ALL the kids in the trampoline, and then some adult wants to bounce too, and people (especially teenagers) are idiots and don't think they'll get hurt and take unnecessary risk on trampolines. So for me, the strong potential for mis-use that makes me worry. Even if you supervise and make sure they're using it properly most of the time, there will eventually be times when the kids are home without supervision.

I am not typical. My son is 7 and has autism. We have a trampoline but it is in our living room. A big 12 foot wide trampoline in our living room. My son uses it on a daily basis and it is the best $150 that I have ever spent for him. Do I worry? Yes. But the benefits far outweigh the concerns for our family. Since it is in our living room and not outside he can use it year round rain or shine. I have zero regrets. But we are not your typical family.

Trampolines are like pools IMO..there is always a risk.

True , but swimming doesn't typically effect developing bones or growth plates. You know what, I change my answer to go for it! I'm all for natural selection.

I agree that was uncalled for. I don’t like trampolines either but would never say something like that.

uncalled for!!

my two cents: they scare me. i would never buy one... but... my cousin who worries more than me had one for years. she, too, has three girls and they loved it. they were always watched and they were always responsible.

whatever decision you make: do a little research and follow your gut.

I honestly have no idea. I bought it at Walmart 6-7 years ago and the logo is long faded off it.

WTH is wrong with you? Wow.

No... you can just drown in a pool. Jesus Christ internet balls are real.

In life, there are risks. Driving a car, walking down stairs, eating romaine lettuce...

Point is, do what you’re comfortsble with. Your kids, your decision. Trampolines are a heck of a lot of fun. Yes, there’s risk involved. Just like everything in life.

Broken bones and sprains are the biggest risks, death isn't very common on a trampoline Chat Icon

The leading cause of death for children under 5 IS in fact accidental drowning (from the AAP). I would say a pool is a greater risk.

Now my son broke his ankle in a bounce house years ago, just landed wrong and had a buckle fracture. He could also trip walking down the street and break his ankle like I've known so many to do!
