 | Where were you when your water broke? I'm 30 weeks along, and I'm worried that I'll ruin my mattress, or carpet, or couch, etc...
Where were you when your water broke, and did you do anything to prep your house before your water broke? If not, did your water breaking ruin anything?

During my last 2 weeks or so of PG, I bought a cheapie shower curtain at the dollar store and put it on our mattress under the sheets, just in case. Yeah, it was July and it s ucked, but better than ruining our expensive mattress.

 | Re: Where were you when your water broke? My started to break while I was in bed at 3:00 in the morning. I felt it so I got up as quick as I can to get to the bathroom.
I had put pads underneath the sheets ( like wee wee pads for dogs) just in case once I was 37 weeks... That helped out alot..

 That's true.

Is it more common for the ROM to be done by the doctor, or while in the hospital?

You mean breaking the water? I'm sorry, I'm not getting the ROM acronym!

Um, well for me, my water broke on it's own. Actually, I think I popped it myself.
I woke up from a "nap" and I stretched my legs and literally heard a little "pop" and then it was niagra falls all over the place.
The Dr was going to break it in a few hours if it hadn't broken on it's own. It all depends on how your labor is progressing whether or not they have to break it. I think that it's more common for you to be already in the hospital when your water breaks because early labor often begins before the water breaks.

The funny thing about it all was that the night before, when I put clean sheet on my bed, I put the garbage bags under the sheets in case my water were to break while in bed. So much for preparing!!

I did buy a waterproof pad that I kept under my sheets on the bed just in case.

Second pregnancy: Maddie was born with the bag of waters in tact just like a little astronaut (called being born in the caul).

 | Re: Where were you when your water broke? My Dh bought a mattress cover to shield the mattress from my possible leakage.
However, that never happened. I must have had some strong Kegels because I walked all the way from my bed to the toilet that morning and it gushed out of me there.

Oops... ROM is the medical term for water breaking... aka Rupture of Membranes.

 | Re: Where were you when your water broke? I just finished dinner and was in my living room on the couch wacthing tv while Dh was washing the dinner dishes. I was 3 weeks early and not expecting it at all. I coughed and next thing I knew - I starting dripping.....Luckily I was home for about an hour (I had left work a little earlier than I would have normally) and not on the LIRR - my biggest fear.... |

 | Re: Where were you when your water broke? My water broke out of nowhere at home & in bed - 2 weeks early. Thankfully, I started my maternity leave that day otherwise I would have been on the LIRR.
ETA: Other than having to wash the sheets and mattress pad - nothing got ruined.
