tonsils/adenoids/tubes this Friday - feeling anxious now

So, DS (3) will be having his tonsils and adenoids removed and ear tubes placed this Friday. Faxed over the medical clearance this morning. So nervous. Yet at the same time, I am so anxious that something will make them have to cancel. I just want this done and my little boy to be on his way to feeling better.

Anyone have any tips or been-there-done-that suggestions? I don't remember being this nervous with my daughter 7 or 8 years ago lol. I am sure I was, but... time dulls the memory and all that lol.

He doesn't eat much now, pretty much all he does is drink milk and water; the doctor says that will likely change after the surgery, as he has difficulty swallowing and probably tasting food right now. Everyone keeps telling me to stock up on ice pops and pudding and mashed potatoes... but he doesn't eat ANY of that right now. Chat Icon I guess I will stock up anyway in the hopes that he will want it when he's feeling a little better.

They have him slotted for 2.5 hours in the OR. I do remember it being the longest couple of hours of my life in that waiting room. Not looking forward to doing this again, though at the same time I can hardly wait for it... because I really do hope it helps him as much as the doctor thinks it will!

If your DC had theirs done, did you notice an improvement? In sleep, speech, eating, behavior, any of that? And if so, about how long did it take before you noticed an improvement?

Thanks and sorry for the random, babbling post - just feeling anxious and all over the place at the moment. I'm sure it will pass and I'll probably shake my head at what all I just wrote because I'm sure I sound crazy lol... Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon DS2 had his tonsils and adenoids removed at almost 2.5. The surgery itself was quick. Due to his age, we had to stay overnight after the procedure. The recovery room was really tough and the first several days afterwards sucked. It's important to give DC pain medication on schedule. DS fought us on medication even though he normally liked it. He did well with drinking the first night we were in the hospital, but then barely had anything the next few days. The best time to try to get him to drink was 30-60 minutes after medication. We bought pudding, ice cream, jello, yogurt, etc. He didn't really want to eat anything for a few days. Finally, he had ice pops one morning and I was thrilled he was turning a corner. Don't stress about what DC eats. Just try to keep DC comfortable and relaxed and get some liquid in.

I was so nervous, but it turned out great. Everything healed nicely. He's no longer a heavy breather, he sleeps so much more soundly and he hasn't been getting ear infections when he gets a cold. We noticed the breathing almost right away. He was such a heavy breather before that whenever he had a cold, receptionists and/or medical assistants at the doctor's office would ask about his wheezing (his chest was always clear).

Good luck!

Thank you for your response... it makes me glad to hear that you saw improvement!

A couple more hours and I can call to find out what time we need to be at the hospital tomorrow. Hoping it's early!

tonsils/adenoids/tubes this Friday - feeling anxious now

My daughter just had tonsil and adenoid surgery done on May 18th. I was very very nervous and everything went great. They told me to expect her to be really upset in recovering but she was not so bad just crying a little but not screaming. She calmed down rather quickly. We did not have to stay overnight. Once she was able to drink some juice/water or eat some ices we went home. I am very lucky to say she had an amazing recovering. By the day after she was up and dancing around like nothing happened. She was cranky but not anything like I had imagined. We bought every soft food and drinks on the list. She really liked the gogurts and yogurt drinks. She also really liked the mini muffins and also apple sauce. She did not want anything to do with the pudding I bought her. The first few days she did not eat too much but the doctor said drinking was more important.

I did not have to give her a drop of tylenol. She refused it and said she was not in pain.

I wish you lots of luck and you hang in there. Once it is over it will be such a relief.

My son had tubes & adenoids out in April. He also was tongue tied so had tongue snipped (No tonsils) He is 3 1/2
For us, the hardest part was him waking up from sedation...he was a monster. I was not prepared with having videos on my phone. I wish I had. When my son was finally awake & home he said "Mommy, my ears are not fuzzy anymore" I wanted to cry. I was so happy he felt better.
