Getting tubes in on Friday...
and DS seems to have a cold. He is coughing and has a runny nose. He is not running a fever and is acting fine. His pre-op. appointment is Thursday morning. Do you think he'll get cleared for surgery on Friday? Do you think I should give him anything? (i.e. Zyrtex or something like that?)
I am really hoping he'll be cleared. He is presenting with a speech delay, so I just want the fluid out of his ears already.

The same thing happened to my son and I hate to tell you, but my ped didn't clear him. He was concerned about having any coughing/chest congestion and going under anesthesia. We had the surgery 3 weeks later. Best thing we ever did for our DS.....he started talking up a storm almost immediately! Good luck! Everything will work out.

Same thing happened to us. Our surgeon had said as long as the nose mucous stayed clear and there was no fever, that we should be fine. He left the final decision up to the anesthesiologist the day of the surgery. We were cleared to go ahead with it. Anesthesiologist said that because the sedation wasn't too heavy, he was comfortable with doing the surgery since the lungs were clear.

Re: Getting tubes in on Friday...
My DD had started with the runny nose when we went to be cleared pre surgery. They said would depend on how she was that morning. The morning of her surgery she was sleeping and when we got to the out patient center and she woke up she was a disaster. Very congested and coughing. The anesthesiologist agreed to do the surgery because that was one of the concerns that she was constantly congested due to fluid. They said that they had to suction out tons of mucas. Gross. Surgery was a success. The Doctors are going to be the ones to determine if your child is healthy enough for surgery. I trusted our Dr 100% I also have nothing negative to say about the experience and the results. Speech improved so much and my Dd hasbeen cconsiderably less congested. Hope you are able to proceed with surgery and be done with it!

Re: Getting tubes in on Friday...
AJ had a fever the night before her tubes went in. I got there and the fever was down but she did have fluid in her ears. Since her fever was down (untreated) they went on with it and sucked all the fluid out while they were there.
She was fine, then got another infection immediately so on top of a cut in her ear drum she had another infection pushing against the tube. After a bout of antibiotic drops it cleared up and she never had anymore. And her speech kicked in at around 30m. She was 17m when she got them.

My dd was not cleared but she had asthma and was on steroids. We rescheduled and my dd once again ended up having to be on antibiotics for strept throat but they have her clearance that time because she was on day 5 of the antibiotics and no longer had a fever.
