Toddler/preschooler discipline---does anyone not use timeouts?
Timeouts just don't seem to work for us---I have been giving a warning and then taking a privilege away (books before bed, park time, etc)---I just don't know if I am getting thru to him. Just looking for any advice or what you do!

Re: Toddler/preschooler discipline---does anyone not use timeouts?
I use time outs and loss of privileges. However, the loss of a privilege comes right on the heels of the crime-i.e. if she is acting up, I threatened to turn off her show or take away a toy and I do it right then.
Pinkandblue gave me a good idea-putting a toy in time out. I.e. if the kids acts up, put their toy in timeout for a few minutes.

Ben will be 3 in June and time-outs alone do not seem to work on him.
We now rely on taking things away combined with time-outs. It's working so far.

I use time-outs, but I also do the "countdown" I count from 1-5 and if she doesn't stop the behavior or listen to what I am saying by the time I get to 5 then she gets time-out. It works well for us. Rarely do I have to get to 5.

Same but I count to 3! By two she is doing or not doing what I ask!

I count to 3 too and by 2 1/2 DS is yelling "NOOOO not 3" and is doing or not doing what I ask.
Gotta love the # system!

I do the same. DD who is 2.5 rarely needs me to get to 3. DS on the other hand who will be 4 next week has gotten to 3 and had things taken away.
I do use time outs but in there room. They do not have any toys or books in there and for some reason that is the only spot he will stay for me.
DS told me in school his teacher uses a tambourine anytime someone is not listening. I was thinking about doing this and see if it works at home.

I just tried the toy in time out--I think it worked...she hasn't gotten out of bed for 10 minutes.
