Today was not what I was expecting
We went to the Level II appt and saw the baby. Everything looks great - two hands, two legs and feet, we saw the brain. But....the baby would not uncross it's legs. The tech tried to look from the start but no luck. The doctor came in (not mine - had to go to LIJ for the test) and he could not determine the sex. The tech said that the legs moved a little and she thought it was a boy. The doctor said he saw a dip behind the legs and was 80% sure it's a girl but would not give a final opinion. So we are back to where we started. But the doctor made me feel bad because he made a comment about how he doesn't think it's important to know and that he prefers not to tell anyway...but he did confirm that the baby looked great - very healthy. I asked if he had a pic for us and he said no - no good shot to give me.
So when he left I started to cry. I was ioverwhelmed by the expectation I had to find out. The tech came back in and was suprised to find us there. She saw me crying and asked what happened. When she found out that we didn't even get a pic she jumped back on the machine and gave me three great shots - two straight on of the face which I really appreciate. She tried to look again but the baby's legs were still crossed. She was so nice though.
I am going to call my doctor on Monday to see when I will have another opportunity to find out. I am so grateful that the baby is okay. I really hope that we can find out soon. DH told me to register for two sets of bedding and whatever we have - whatever I get for the shower - he will make sure that when the time comes I have the right one for the right sex. He's been so good about cheering me up.

Re: Today was not what I was expecting
- I completely understand. With both of my pregnancies I was unable to find out the sex on the first sonogram. Both DD's were breech, sunny side up and legs crossed.
Sorry that the dr. was such an A**!

It's true - and once I got over the disappointment of not finding out I was completely happy to know that our little munchkin is healthy. I realized it when DH was talking to him mom and only said we didn't find out - I yelled at him to tell her that the baby was healthy - kinda snapped out of it at that moment.

Re: Today was not what I was expecting
we couldn't find out the firtst time either. The umbilical cord was between the legs and then the baby turned it's back to us. We were soooo disappointed.
Our OB was awesome - told us to come back in 2 weeks and they would do some more measurements and look again.
The 2nd time our gave us a birds eye view!
So, maybe if you call your Dr they will do another sono in a couple of weeks....good luck!

Re: Today was not what I was expecting
I'm sorry you couldn't find out. And yes, as others have said, that doc sounds like a jerk. He couldn't even be bothered giving you one pic That's ridiculous. I must have over 30 pics of my twins from my sonograms. Kudos to the tech for bringing you back in.
I'm assuming they tried to have you roll on your side, etc. to get the baby to move.
Maybe at your next appt. you could ask the doc or nurse if they culd do a quick two second sono just to see if they could determine the gender.
It's so funny how so many practices are different. I have a sono every two weeks (to check on heartbeats) and a growth sono, at this stage every month.

Re: Today was not what I was expecting
The doctor had pushed and prodded my tummy to see if the baby would move it's legs but no luck. When the tech came back I had already been sitting up and moving so she was eager to try again...no luck. But she did try her best. I wish my doctor would do these test in her office. I had my first internal sonogram in her office but since then I have only had two more sonograms - both at LIJ since they were testing. I hope she can hookme up although I have a feeling no one will accomodate a resquest just to see the gender. We'll have to just be surprised. DH and I both agree that we have a strong feeling it's a girl.

OK, I have an idea
Come with me to my next appointment, I'l sneak you into the room with me and if necessary I'LL do the sono on you Seriously, if you combine the internal and external sonos I've had, through fertility treatments and pregnancy so far, I've definitely had at least 50. You would think I could give them to myself No one will ever know...lol.
There was once a time I thought I could probably take my own blood sample too
Why can't they do this in the doc's office. Don't they even have one of the simple old b/w sono machines

Thank you for that - you made me smile from ear to ear.
I am going to be persistent with my doctor to see if she can accomodate and let me in for a sonogram. If I have to fake a fall I will damn it!

Re: Today was not what I was expecting
You'll find out, might just be in a few months! Don't worry, even if you did 'find out' they could be wrong! Its still known to happen. Just feel great it was all good news about the health because that isn't the news everyone gets!
We're not finding out, and the extra surprise when we have the baby is something I really look forward to!!!
AND DON'T FEEL BAD about crying! You had expectations! Totally normal to feel disappointed and express that.

Re: Today was not what I was expecting
I'm sorry you are so sad.
Here's a story to make you laugh...We didn't find out the gender with either baby. When Sarah was born DH was down by my legs with the doctor and could clearly see she was a girl, as could my doctor. From up where I was and the nurse standing next to my shoulder her umbilical cord was kinked or something and looked like it was a boy and the nurse shouts "It's a boy!" DH looked totally confused and my doctor said "No it's not!" It took me about a minute to really figure out if it was a boy or a girl. And DH said that when the nurse yelled "It's a boy!" he thought that when I told him before we went to the hospital that sometimes little boys are born with their testicles still inside them that it must mean everything's inside.

Re: Today was not what I was expecting
Ang - I'm so sorry I know how disappointing that must be. I don't know if I told you but Natalie (Tanaholic) had the same problem at her Level 2. She was so excited to find out and the tech was extremely rude and she ended up having to wait a few weeks because Dom wasn't showing his goods.
I know how frustrating it must be - and I'm sure you want to be totally organized for when the baby comes but you still have lots of time to find out what he/she is. Thank goodness for a healthy baby!!!! That's the best news of all!
