TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
i started taking prenatals on tuesday...PrimeCare Advantage with DHA & EPA. this particular one has a stool softener in it to balance the constipation that can happen with the increased iron in prenatal vitamins.
since 2 a.m. last nite i have been dying on the toilet bowl i can't stop going, its to the point where it burns and hurts to go and i'm barely making it to the bathroom.
i'm not sure if i might have a stomach virus--or maybe the stool softener is working too well on me. has anyone ever had these issues with prenatals? if it continues tomorrow--i'm gonna stop the vitamins and see if that helps. doc gave me samples to start and if they didn't work, he'd give me a different one.
figured i'd see if anyone else had this problem.

Re: TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
oh sweety - i know the feeling - no joke...it was HORRIBLE.... i was going pure water, and on an iv - EVERY OUNCE OF FLUID they put in me - came right back out. I literally was going every 10 minutes - it was a nightmare. They had to move an in the room latrine thing in for me - because i had a close call or 2 and was crying because of it....
if you are keeping food down....it could still be the virus - dave handled food well, and was sick for 24 hours - i was sick for 10 days...
if you think it's the vitamins though - do NOT take them today - see how tomorrow goes.
I have a VERY weak stomach - due to IBS and a history of ulcers...and a close friend of mine who is a nurse suggested Target prenatals - she SWORE by them and still takes them to this day (and she has ibs the OTHER way - she never goes).. Since day 1 i haven't had any issue at all with them.
Now that i'm pregnant - i have added in a folic acid supplement and DHA pills made by Expecta (not from a fish source - because most DHA pills can cause fishy burps)..

Ughhh sorry you're going through this! I know there is a really bad stomach bug going around. It could be that, but I'd stop taking the vitamins and see if it helps. Feel better!

I think either way it's a good idea to stop the vitamins. If it's them you'll get better and if it's a virus I'm sure they're not helping. They can be pretty rough on the tummy.
Hope you feel better soon!

Re: TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
I am taking otc pre-natals. At first I had that problem of not going. So I took correctal with them. After 1 week I could not leave the bathroom. So I stopped them and only take them 1-2 times a week and I spread them apart.

Re: TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
I would stop the vitamins asap and see how it goes the next day or 2. too much stool softener is no good.
i've read that so many pple get nausea and stomach problems from them, so this could very well be.
are you running a fever as well? if you are maybe its a virus. but either way, stop the pills and try to stay hydrated..get some gatorade or pedialyte.
i bought rainbow light brand from target and i've had no issues. it says that its easy to digest. I have a very sensitive stomach and take probiotics every day anyway, but I have not had any issues with these.
Maybe you should try them. they do not have a stool softener in them.

Re: TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
thanks ladies....i stopped making friends with the toilet around 10pm last nite. so far haven't had to go since then. me thinks it was a stomach virus combined with the stool softener in the pills.
i was yelling at DH saying how if this is cause of the vitamins then I plan on squeezing his balls tight as can be since it makes me bitter he can't carry the kid and prepare for it. he responded with "I love you too baby"

Re: TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
yuck....I had similar issues, but the opposite problem on the toilet. The total opposite. Since I'm not actually pregnant yet, I'm just taking a multivitamin and extra folic acid.
When/if I ever get pg again, I'll go back to the pre-natals. Somehow, when I actually was pg, I didn't mind the side effects of the pre-natals as much b/c I knew it was pain with a purpose.
But it could be a while until pg again, not prepared to be married to the toilet for all that time.

Re: TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
I just posted a topic about the vitamins and lack of going to the bathroom. I'm usually pretty regular, but not since I started taking them at the end of Dec. I hope you feel better. I'm going to see what happens next week and then speak to my gyno. I have an appt on Thursday.

Re: TMI Topic--Stomach issues w/prenatal vitamins
i had the same problem with pre-natals and never gave my body a chance to get used to it b/c i couldnt take it..i just take a multi vitamin and make sure it has enough folic acid & im fine with that. if you can deal with it try giving it a few days to see if your body gets used to it & the problem stops...i never gave it the chance b/c with my job there was no where to go & be discreet
it is the wierdest thing though...
