TMI- about what we all fear....
OK- we watched "Laugh and Learn Lamaze" and the instructor discussed giving yourself an enema in the early stages of labor to avoid "doing what must never be mentioned" on the table.
Anyone here planning on doing this, or any BTDT moms done it?
I never thought I'd care, and I really don't think I do, but hell, if I can AVOID "doing what must never be mentioned" I might as well.....

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
They gave me an enema at L&D when I was in Labor with my eldest daughter....
TMI..But it was my only delivery where I, may have, done what we dont want to mention..I dont know for sure..But I may have...
If you have never had an enema let me tell you that ....it may take several trips to the bathroom before you...well...clean it all out..and during labor, sitting on the toilet, baring down, is the last thing you want to be doing..
I personally do not want to go that route again.

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
you can always eat something light that won't make you go....
that's one of the good things about an induction....you know when you're going in, so you know when your cut off to eat is. I *think* I ate a bowl of cereal that morning...I may not have.
And I went all day without eating too....and after the epi, forget it...NOTHING except ice chips. They told me that since you are numb from the waist down, EVERYTHING goes numb and slows down, including your digestive system, so food will just sit there and you may end up throwing up

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
After watching that video, and knowing someone that got an enema I wanted to def. do it (I have major stomach issues and this is one of my biggest fears)
BUT
I asked my Dr. and she said she doesn't believe in giving them. People have said I could do it myself at home but I think that would just make me too nervous.

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
I was considering going that route too...enema, but friends that are nurses say even if "it" does happen that it is cleaned up so quickly/efficiently you may not even realize it. It apparently happens fairly often.
SCARY though!!!!!!

I understand about the stomach issues... my DH makes fun of me all the time, he says that I have stress diarrhea

Yes - stress makes it that much worse. I swear there are times when I can just get on the phone with my mom and will have to run off and go to the bathroom bc I know by the tone in her voice I will end up being stressed!!!
I made DH promise that if god forbid something happens on that table he never even mentions a word to me about it!

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
Several mommies on the parenting board have DONE it.....it's inevitable if you think about it....you're using the same muscles to push that mini-bowling ball out of a garden hose. I told DH he gets all of 5 minutes to make fun if it happens and is NOT allowed to EVER mention it again or to ANYONE.
they say that you never know unless the idiots we call husbands make fun of us!

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
I was considering telling DH to stay up by my head until it is all over... so if I DO do it (hehe) he won't see.
After reading "Belly laughs" I was seriously considering a C section just so that wouldn't happen!

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
I don't know about this... I mean, I will be embarassed, but I also know it is sooo common. Not to mention, I'll be embarrassed about having my legs sprawled out for everyone in the first place. And with all that pushing, how could you not go #2??
...and if pooping wasn't bad enough, my sister just told me that after delivery she was transferring beds and the nurses were helping her....well, she was passing gas left and right because she couldn't feel down there after the epi...so she couldnt even hold them in !! For some reason, this sounds more embarrasing to me then actually pooping!

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
I had a scheduled induction...which didnt work, when they decided to do the c-section, they gave me an enema. Let me tell you ladies...it was pretty nasty! The nurse told DH to go get something to eat...if he saw this..I dont think things would ever be the same between us . Well, not really, but it was gross. It would have been helpful to know that it doesnt all come out at once, I had to run to the bathroom 3 times...all while attached to an IV...not an easy task. But wow, I didnt poop again after it until the day I came home from the hospital 5 days later

Strangely, this doesn't worry me at all. If it happens, it happens, and I think I'll be way beyond caring when/if it does. It's gross, but I could live with it.
No way am I giving myself an enema. That sounds bad enough right now--can't imagine doing it while I'm in labor.

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
You can ask for an enema when you go to the hospital. I was worried about it but not so much. My childbirth class instructor says dont eat anything with fiber in it on the day u go into labor. Just try and drink fluids only, and munch on some crackers.

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
Seriously, if this is what you fear than you must sleep well at night. There are much more scary things that can happen than poop. Once your in labor it so doesn't matter -- you are way too focused on getting that baby out of you safely and quickly!

I'm with you. My childbirth instructor (who's a nurse) even said that if you do that, at least they know you're pushing the right way!

Re: TMI- about what we all fear....
My sister is a L&D nurse. She says if it happens, they just clean it up & move on...it's not a big deal. What she does get annoyed about is some women who know they have to go #2 and tell everyone they have to go, and they have the time & ability to get out of the bed to go do it, but refuse...she says that really ticks the nurses off then, since they were given plenty of opportunities!!
