Tick prevention?

Where we live there are a lot of ticks. We just mvoed here and I've never seen one before, but yesterday Charlie had a huge thing sticking out of his neck. It was the size of a small grape.

We took him to the vet immediately and indeed it was a tick! Chat Icon

Luckily, Charlie has been vaccinated for Lyme Disease. We use frontline on him, and now we've got a tick collar on him too.

We've got a liquid deer fence around our property now and the gardner is coming back today to discuss what our options are.

I'm curious what you all do regarding tick prevention both for yourselves and your pets.

Is there something I should be doing that I am not?

Re: Tick prevention?

You seem to be taking all the necessary precautions.

Only one I could add is to not allow your dog to walk under any bushes/trees/shrubs.

Thank you, Ms Jen!
It does work, however the only downside being you need to saturate the pup EACH time he is in a tick infested area- the solution has no residual effect- but it is definitely worth the effort!
Thanks again-

Do frequent inspections of your dog's body no matter what else you do.

That's the best advice!

Re: Tick prevention?

We live surrounded by woods also and we use Frontline Plus. It works well, we forgot it once for just 1 month and Brody came in with 3 ticks on him. So far we have success with that. We always check him, esp. since I had lyme disease last year myself.

Did you get the "bullseye" rash? Lyme disease really worries me. How did you know you had it?

And do you think the ticks stay off a dog who uses frontline or that they tick goes on them, but dies? Any thoughts? I just started using Frontline (used to use Revolution but it is not so good for ticks) and hope it works since I have been going to more dogparks lately.

And you say you check him but from what i read the deer tick is about the size of a speck of dirt/pepper so how can you see them? I read the ticks you can't see are the ones to worry about!

I'm going to try and answer both questions....

We've been using Frontline Plus for three year, take Misty to woods with deer and dog parks all the time.

We use Frontline Plus - the ticks do go on the dog, but they die before bleeding in. They are generally very easy to remove.

Deer ticks are not that small...they are about the size of a pencil head, plus the legs make them a little bigger. They actually look like one of those red mites, only brown. Or a tiny spider.
You can see or feel them on the dog. Run your fingers through the fur and if you feel something hard - tick....or sometimes you can see them if you run through the fur backwards.

HTH!

Re: Tick prevention?

Yes, I had the bullseye rash. I never found a tick on me, but I had this tiny itchy pimply thing on my shoulder for lilke 3 weeks. Dh kept saying it was a pimple, but it itched and then began to hurt. One day it was driving me crazy and I pulled my shirt off and DH just said OMG there is a huge circle on your back. I had lyme.
The ticks we found on Brody were not
tiny as pepper or dirt, they were like the size say of a ladybug, or a lil smaller. They were brownish. We could see them sticking out and we had to pull them out with a tweezer. Not saying they were deer ticks, just ticks nonetheless. I guess the tiny deer tick is the one that must have gotten me though!

Very helpful, yes! Thanks!

Also, do you see ticks moving? Such as with fleas, you see them crawl or run sometimes when you approach with a flea comb. What do ticks do? I assume move slowly? And would you say if a tick goes on your dog, it will most likely stay there or will it come off and go onto a human just as quickly? And when you see them/feel them, would you say they are engorged or not at all, yet still visible?

Sorry for all the ?, but I am trying to get used to the thought b/c they really scare me!

Re: Tick prevention?

Thanks for all of the information everyone!

I also had the gardner come and he has some ideas for bug prevention that he is going to put together. I'll post what he says to keep this going.

So far since the incident Charlie has not had any additional ticks so I think the tick collar is really helping.

Ticks do move, they crawl - but not as fast as a flea. It's much more slow, kind of like a spider.
A tick falls off it's host, climbs up to the top of a plant and extends its legs to grasp onto another host. They will move from dog to person or person to dog...they prefer animals though, because of the fur.
You can see them at any time...I've found them crawling and I've found them partially engorged. They are easier to see when they are engorged.
Unlike fleas, ticks don't prefer any areas of the body...they will latch on anywhere.

This is what a normal tick looks like...

Thanks so much Gerty! Extremely helpful, esp the pic! I really do appreciate it. I have researched a lot and yours is the most helpful info by far. Chat Icon

I fully recovered, yes, I had to take an antibiotic for 3 weeks and I am fine, By the time I got to the doc i could not move my left arm, the pain was excruciating. The bite was on my upper back/shoulder. The nurse said it was good I got the bullseye because those who dont usually go untreated. I know many people who have had lyme and a friend of my cousin got it many years ago, went untreated and suffered a long time with it, she is also fine now.

The ticks we found on Brody were not moving, theyw ere alreasdy attached and we had to pull them out. My Dh had one on his leg and we pulled it out. The tick that bites you has to be infected for you to get lyme I believe. They do not all have it and not all tick bites will give you lyme if I am not mistaken.
