What agency did you use? Do you have any experience with Care.com?

**Edited to add:
I should have provided some background to my initial question, it might have helped to have the context.

Currently my 2 year old is in a daycare (he's been there since 12 weeks of age) and there was an incident recently where he fell and needed stitches and I was besides myself. He jumps and is all over the place and has fallen with us and gotten hurt. He's just a rough and tumble little boy and needs that extra eye on him.

The problem I'm having is that this incident changed his whole dynamic in this class and this facility in general. My older son is there and his experience has been fantastic and he LOVES it. I'm seeing now that my 2 year old is now acting out a bit and waking in the middle of the night with nightmares about going to "school" as he calls it. "No lika school, mama" he says and the dynamic with his teacher has escalated downward as well. It's just not a good fit for him anymore.

My dilemma is whether I should push for a different class, or get a nanny and keep him home. I pay $15K per year for 8am-6pm care for him there. I'm not even sure if that would cover a nanny or what....just looking for a different perspective.

TIA!

thanks for the response! do they screen them on care.com? Can you pay for a background check? I know an agency would have them screened and I wasn't sure if there was a benefit to doing one over the other.

Also, do you like have a nanny? What are the benefits vs. daycare? I have a two year old.

Re: Those with Nannies...Please help!

I used both sittercity and care.com, I've hired 4 different nannies through them and have had GREAT experiences. you can pay for a background check but I have never done it.

I work part-time so a nanny is super cost-effective, I absolutely love it for that and many other reasons.

Benefits - you don't have to wake them up in the morning, you don't have to drag them out in the cold in the morning. No daycare germs. They can sleep in their own cribs/beds. They get one-on-one attention. you dont' have to take off when they're sick. When I hire I ask if they are ok taking care of sick kids (within reason, I probably wouldn't leave them home puking on the nanny).

Negatives - I feel like I have to keep my house relatively clean. Turnover (4 nannies in 4 years).. because I work part-time I tend to hire students who have class schedules that work with my schedule so this isn't their forever job. You lose some flexibility with your work day.. lots of daycares they can be there for up to like 12 hours for the same price, a nanny obviously isn't that way. Daycares can't call in sick and don't ask for time off.

People tout the benefits of interactions with other kids at daycare and I was a nervous wreck my daughter would be a wallflower but she started preschool this year and is a social butterfly so that fear is done.

We used care.com

Benefits of a nanny - you don't have to get your child up early and out of the house. Especially on cold wet mornings

They can do little things around the house for you while baby is napping

If your kid is sick you don't have to take off from work the nanny is there.

You can enroll your child in activities or they can go to the library and the nanny can bring them.
If you come home early the nanny can go home (we still pay her the same), but then if we need her to stay a little later one day we don't have to.
You don't have to rush to be home in time before the daycare closes - she is at home

We have had the same nanny for almost 6 years now - she is part of the family.

We used care.com and love our babysitter.
She's incredible & there are less colds & worrying about when things open & close.
The big negative, of course, is you are trusting in one person who is unsupervised with your kids.

We used sittercity.com and went through a few nannies before we settled on the one we have. Although we did find her when my son was born, we kept her on a trial period to see how she interacted with our son. We also have cameras linked to our iphones and keep an eye throughout the day. She has been heaven sent and my son loves her. She takes our son to classes when needed and helps around the house. Biggest drawback is the price- very expensive!

Care.com does a basic screen (checking SS#, etc) but once we found our nanny we did pay for a more thorough check, which you get through Care.com but it's an outside company that does it. We also checked references.

We had a nanny for a year but we've moved and DS is in day care now. There are postives and negatives...

Benefits...I never had to wake DS up since the nanny came to our house. I could tell her exactly how I wanted her to do things and she was 1:1 with DS so he got a lot of attention. When DS was sick, I didn't have to take time off to stay home with him, since day care wouldn't allow sick kids.

Negatives...When the nanny got sick, we were stuck and had to take off work. Nannies are obviously more expensive than day care. We also felt incredibly bad when we moved and had to let her go. We were her income, so that was hard on us since we had built a relationship with her. But it is what it is!

Personally, I liked the nanny situation for when DS was small. As he got older, I wanted him to learn more socialization and have some structured "learing" that day care provides.

Same here except we've only had one nanny for the past 2.5years. We found her on Sittercity.com but through the interview process we realized our families knew each other and that was the best background check possible, IMO. If you work PT and need flexibility, someone caring for the children in your home is really wonderful.

Re: Those with Nannies...Please help!

the other posters have addressed a lot of the positives and negatives of a nanny so i'll just add some perspective on cost. i pay more than double what you stated are your daycare costs for a nanny for my ONE child, 45 hours per week. i would expect to pay even more for a nanny to watch 2 kids, but probably not the same % increase you see in daycares when going from 1 to 2 children. for our situation, that added cost was worth it to us but i'm sure at some point in the future we will reevaluate and think about daycare/preschool instead - and I very much look forward to the savings!

edited to add: we interviewed candidates from sittercity and word of mouth. ended up hiring a word of mouth recommendation but the sittercity people were all good too. didn't do a formal background check, but i checked references and went with my gut instinct

$15k won't come close to what you'll need to cover paying a nanny. It'll probably be double. So if money is an issue, you probably should see about changing classrooms or centers.

But...if you are willing to pull both children out, and pay 1 person to watch both of them together (instead of paying a full time nanny AND full time daycare for another child) you will probably wind up paying more than you are now, but not as much as you would paying two different services.

I'm seeing now that my 2 year old is now acting out a bit and waking in the middle of the night with nightmares about going to "school" as he calls it. "No lika school, mama" he says and the dynamic with his teacher has escalated downward as well. It's just not a good fit for him anymore.

TIA!

I just wanted to touch on this... Did he start a new class by any chance? I know once my DD hits a certain age, they move her into the appropriate class.

I went through the EXACT same thing with my DD. To the point where she was saying she didn't like school and specifically didn't like her teacher,Miss so-and-so. Five weeks later and she "loves Miss so-and-so", "wants to kiss Miss so-and-so". So, it could just be a phase.

I know exactly what you mean and you are right!
But this is different, he had an incident where he fell and needed stitches and the whole dynamic with the teacher changed after that. She now has a bad mark on her record having had this incident (he fell and hit his head to the point he needed stitches, etc) and it just changed the relationship between then for the worse. She is always anxious and nervous with him now and her patience is shorter now. It's just not a good fit.

I would only have my 2 year old home and my 4 year old would still be in pre school. He needs that and he loves it. So I would still need the two different services.

This word for word except she is with us 1.5 years and is already part of the Family.
