Those who own a ranch
Can you tell me the pros and cons of owning a ranch style house? Are you happy with it?

Re: Those who own a ranch
We have a 3 bedroom ranch and I like it. I have alway's liked ranch style homes. There is definitely room to build up or out so if you are interested in expanding there are many options. I find no negatives in a ranch as opposed to other stylehomes. HTH.

Re: Those who own a ranch
I grew up in a ranch and I can tell you a few things
Cons: NO Basement Cement Slab is cold....I have a Levit cape now with the cement slab and it is cold too. Usually only 1 floor
Pros: No Steps to get into house If you want all bedrooms on one floor then buy a ranch.

Re: Those who own a ranch
We have a ranch and love it
Open floor plans, no stairs, split bedroom (our bedroom is on one part of the house and the guest rooms are on another and everything is right on one floor.
We have a cement slab and dont notice any coldness. But we also have carpet through out the house and tile floor in the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry rooms.
I've seen some of the 2 floor homes in FL and they seem very cave like and closed in. I like the openess and it makes the house feel a lot bigger then what it really is.
Definately no con's in my book.

Re: Those who own a ranch
I LOOOOOOOOVE ranches
the only negitives i have heard from others is that:
They do not like that your bedrooms are on the same floor as the rest of your house...Less privacy i guess
Your basement is underground
I still want one...i think they are adorable

Re: Those who own a ranch
we've been looking mostly at ranch style homes and the only drawback that I can see is that the bedrooms are really small, for the most part. I don't think I've seen 1 ranch with a really nice sized master bedroom. the bedroom in my apt is bigger than all the one's I've seen in a ranch homes.
can you tell I really want a big master bedroom?
aside from that, I love ranches! it's so great having everything on 1 level. and DH and I have seen MANY ranches with basements.

Ranches have basements not all of them...but MOST do.
And there are steps on some to get into the house

A regular ranch is a house that has no basement usually - If it is a split ranch then it is a splanch not a ranch. If it is a high ranch then it is not a regular ranch anymore - I am referring to a regular ranch that is usually built on a cement slab

Re: Those who own a ranch
Well i am telling you that there are GAZILLION ranches, not spanches, not spits...not even high ranches...
THAT HAVE BASEMENTS
I know because i have been to over 30-40 of them in 3 different towns
Ranches do have basements...
not all of them....BUT A LOT of them
ETA...a SPLIT is NOT a splanch either

Re: Those who own a ranch
I own a ranch and it has a full basement that runs the length of the house. No attic though... just a crawlspace attic.
I like my house, I just wanted a house with 3 bedrooms and a large yard... I wasnt particular on the style too much.

I grew up in a ranch - I loved it. Definitely a nice open floor plan - the rooms flow nicely
it had a full basement that my parents eventually finished!

Re: Those who own a ranch
My mom owns a ranch, it is where I grew up. The whole back is expanded into a BIG dining room, ad dinette, and the kitchen is expanded. We also have a room over the garage (up stairs) that is used as an office. There is also a full basement.
The only negative is bedrooms are on the same floor as the rest of the living space... which didn't bother me. The full finished basement is where most "parties" were held.

Re: Those who own a ranch
we lived in an AMAZING ranch in St James... full basement too... i dont think there were any cons with that ranch because it was big enough that the bedrooms were pretty separated from the other rooms of the house... and the master bedroom was huge... i would give an arm and a leg to live in a house like that now...
i think that all ranches are pretty unique, and each set up probably has its own pros and cons... right now, we live in a cape, but the main bedroom is on the main floor and it is annoying if DH has people over because they are right outside the bedroom if i want to sleep or lay down... it is also annoying that we dont have a master bath and i have to leave my bedroom to go to the bathroom, and i have a small closet... but do i assume that all capes have that set up just because mine does? no... everyone is different... especially with how people expand on houses now...

Re: Those who own a ranch
I live in Islandia and we have a "farm ranch" it is ranch bottom with a cape top. We have a HUGE master bedroom with bath connected and a very small BD right next to that(good for a nursery) Then two BD and a 1/2 bath upstairs with the sloped ceiling. It is around 2200 sq ft. We liek it! We wll probably end up moving once we have a child turn 5 or 6 becaus ethe school district is not very good here
