Those who had an epidural during labor....

Have any of you experienced back pain as a result of having the epidural? If so, how long did it last?

I had DS last week and I got stuck twice with the epidural bc the first time didn't complete numb my left side, so they had to adjust it. I didn't feel any pain after birth, but within 24-hours my back starting hurting and the hospital bed didn't help matters. My OB has me on Motrin for the pain, but I would gave thought the pain would go away within a week. I m still having difficulty laying on my back to sleep at night.

Just wondering if anyone else had similar issues and could shed some light on this and offer any advice. I didn't have this issue with DD 3-years ago.

I didn't have that. I hope it's just sore and not an infection though. Have you spoken to your dr again since it's been a week?

I didn;t have an epidural, but a spinal for a C-Section. I had lower back pain for about 8 weeks after i had both my twins and my DS. It wasn't as bad with my DS as it was with my twins. I'd talk to your dr again, but i am pretty sure that can be a side effect.

I had both a spinal and epidural and I had no pain as a result of either. If you are still having pain give your doctor a call.

Re: Those who had an epidural during labor....

Yes both times. I was stuck 5 times before the epidural was in and I felt the pain on my left side. I was fine for about 2 weeks after my csection but once I was able to pick things up it started same place, same pain. I don't know what it is and I do remember it was the same after dd1 was born. I think it lasted a while (4 months )and its possibly related to loose stomach muscles and the fact I'm using my back muscles more.? I don't know but some days by night time I can hardly walk.
Feel better

It's funny you write this because I was just talking to DH about my back this morning. I had a weird pain that basically felt like there was still a needle sticking in there. I would feel it mostly when I moved certain ways and I would get really uncomfortable when I would hunch over to BF DS. Laying down wasn't an issue for me though. It did go away with time, but we're talking months.

Fast forward to now, DS is 15 mo old and my back has been ok. The other day I strained it moving something very heavy and now I have that same feeling of a needle sticking in there when I move around. It's not crippling but it is annoying and makes me concerned that it might be a larger issue in the future.

Definitely talk to your doctor about this.

No - call your doctor. Maybe it's not from the epidural but from labor. Did you have back labor pains?

I do occasionally get a weird pain where the epi was...it never lasts long just comes and goes, so strange! But it always feels the same and comes out of nowhere.

Re: Those who had an epidural during labor....

I had an epi and the next day or 2 my back felt sore- like a bruise. But only if I touched or laid on that one spot.
But it wasn't anything crazy- just like a bruise almost and it went away in a few days.

I had an epi and didn't have any pain afterwards. The only discomfort I felt was if I stretched forward; i would feel some soreness but no other pain.

Re: Those who had an epidural during labor....

i dont know if the pain ive had is because of it... i assumed it was from leaning over to changer her/pick her up etc after giving birth.

ETA: immediately after it just felt like a bruise

Epi and no pain but they told me to keep an eye out just in case and if so, to let them know.

Those who had an epidural during labor....

I gave birth 3 weeks ago today and had a spinal epidural for a repeat c section and yea I did have back pain. It actually started during the c section which was weird. I remember saying to my DH about 45 min into the c/s that my back hurt. Not excruiciating pain but achy feeling S I was lying on the OR table. It persisted for about a week -10 days afterwards by the way I didn't know If it was from the epi or the Or table.

Re: Those who had an epidural during labor....

Yes, the spot still feels sore 9 months later if I bend over a certain way or press on it a certain way. Not terrible pain, but a soreness like a bruise. Also, I've been having a lot of nerve pain/tingling in my back & I wonder if it's related to the epidural, or if it's just from carrying the baby a lot.

I had an epi and a spinal and as a pp said it felt like I had a bruise on my back for about 2 weeks. Actually I DID have a bruise on my back from it, so that's exactly what my pain was. But nothing major.

Re: Those who had an epidural during labor....

There are a lot of things that can cause back pain after childbirth.

Epidurals usually result in a bruise which is caused by needle going through tissue during placement. This causes pain when you press on area. & goes away in a week or two.

Labor can cause pain because you in a weird position & pushing. Sometimes you can get nerve injury from pushing in the wrong position.

Finally, many people with pregnancy are putting a lot of stress on their bodies and can have back injury (herniated discs, etc). This will cause pain & sometimes numbess or weakness.

An epidural that banged up your nerve would have hurt horribly going in or caused tingling going down a leg that doesn't go away.

If you have pain and numbness or weakness, go back to your OB and ask to see a neurologist.
