I was advised by my accountant to list all personal items that were lost, and that were not covered by my insurance/fema. He also said that I needed to list a "thrift" value for each item.
How did you determine your item's value?
TIA.

I am going to speak to my SIL about this. She is our accountant.
My neighbor across the street told me he claimed on his taxes and got a lot back.
I feel kind of funny though, because we did get a lot of help from FEMA and DH did all the work himself.
That saved us SO much money.
I will let you know what she says. I am seeing her about it tomorrow.

Do you have any receipts? Could you go on amazon and see how much the type of items you lost sell for today? I would ask your accountant if he wants present value or depreciated values.

Thanks so much..I appreciate it. FEMA unfortunatly only covered our heater and washer/dryer...we had a full basement apartment fully furnished and stored tons of personal items down there....who knew? There was never water in the entire 30+ years of the house's history. I have pictures of everything destroyed, but no receipts..my accountant did say if I ever got audited that your credit card statements can show purchases...but who knows when things were acually bought?
