 | Re: This may make me sound like an idiot-food related OMG u and I are sharing a brain today. I was cutting up DD's french toast this morning and was wondering if I should still be cutting it up or just give it to her to chew on. I'm terrified she's going to try to shove the whole thing in her mouth though |

However, they are usually not hard things or things that she can't really bite or things that she will likely choke on. KWIM?. For instance I give her whole French Fries all the time.
ETA: I also watch closely when I give her anything to bite on.

The other day DD grabbed a chicken drumstick and walked around eating it...it was too funny...she was very proud of herself...she is 15 months

Yes thats what I'm afraid of...I am always right there when they are eating but I have a crazy fear of both of them choking at once and what I would do etc etc...
Maybe I'll try it on different days. Thanks everyone. |

 | Re: This may make me sound like an idiot-food related J&M are 14 months and I started giving them food to bite into a month ago - I figured they are going to have to learn sometime. They do pretty well with it. There are still things I cut up though.
 Things they bite into are-

grilled cheese (I cut the sandwich into quarters and then give them a quarter)
english muffin (they love it with sunflower seed butter)
 waffles

dinner-type foods I still cut up for them.

 | Re: This may make me sound like an idiot-food related You may be shocked since I am a usual worry wart...but about a mth or so ago i started giving SOME things whole.
For ex, a waffle, toast with cream cheese, grilled cheese, a cereal bar, a cookie or biter biscuit, etc.

What I started with was toast. I would show her what to do, rip a little peice off a bit so it would hang when she went to pull it with her mouth. Then I say "little bite".

The first few times she did not get it. Last month I realized she got the hang of it and I started with things that would not crack off in a large peice (such as toast). Now she does great, and she LOVES holding her own food and biting off of it. I don't do it with certain things, like meat (such as a chicken nugget). Only things that I KNOW if she gets a very large peice of she CAN chew good.

Keep trying. My DD shoved a whole half of a slice of cheese in her mouth about 2 mths ago. So what I kept doing was showing her with a peice of toast, with the tip sort of half ripped off so she would see what a little bite should be. I kept doing it and it worked. She got it very quickly.

I worry about choking too. But that's why what I started with was I used to put only one or two peices of a food down so she would not shove them all into her mouth. Then I gradually increased as I knew she could handle more. Now she shoves like 5 peices in her mouth sometimes so I KNOW she can handle a large bite, should she bite a large chunk off of something whole now.

My DH always says to me, don't put so many down on her tray. And I say, NO, she needs to learn to chew a large amount b.c you never know if she bites off of something what size the peice will be. And yes, she learned to chew large amts that way so I don't worry as much anymore knowing she can handle LARGE amts of food, kwim? The other day I turned around and she had like 5 goldfish in her mouth, cheeks puffed out and I held my hand out and told her to spit them out. But I know she could have done it if I had not intervened. She usually doesn't shove so much in, but occasionally she does.

I was cutting everything up still. I still do that a lot though, although I do let her stuff whole pancakes in her mouth

Ronan does not have as many teeth but still has a good amount but I feel he is better with eating a small amount of food.

DS cut his first tooth a month ago and his second one a few days ago. His first tooth still isn't that far above his gums. I usually cut things up, but daycare gives him waffles and crackers whole. I'm sure they give him others things whole too, but those are the only ones we've seen him eat. I gave him a whole animal cracker for the first time last night to see if he'd take a bite. He just shoved the whole thing in his mouth. Since he doesn't really have teeth, that made me more nervous and I started braking them in half. He probably would've been fine with it.
