The Unexpected
What have you experienced, during the buying process, and/or after owning a home that was totally unexpected?
And how did you deal with it?

When you are in the heat of the moment, bidding on a house, and the RE agent tells you there are other bids, and you need to come up, be firm on how high you are willing to go. Ive been caught up many times, bid a little higher than I should have, and exhaled when it didnt work out.

but as far as the unexpected:
the seller will be emotionally attached to the figure they've decided on.
this one i learned from other's mistakes:
don't buy more house than you can afford

Everything will cost more than first anticipated:
- closing costs
- utilities
- repairs/maintenance

While Buying the Home:
I was thinking the EXACT same thing. Also, Get EVERYTHING in writing.
After owning the home:
Be ready for the "little" jobs to turn into BIG projects!
Don't under estimate how it feels to OWN your own home!

don't trust the seller..
DH and i AND our friends who just bought a house each had problems with the seller lying about water coming into the basement.... when the inspector pointed out water damage in the basement, our seller told us " oh.. yeah... our hot water heater broke one weekend when we were away, and the water was sitting on the basement floor all weekend".. made sense to us- sure enough, we move in and the first big rainstorm, we get a couple inches of water in the basement!  luckily Dh was able to fix it with some concrete, but STILL!
our friends had a similar situation where their seller told them " oh yeah, we OCCASIONALLY get water in the basement"... turns out water POURS in every time it rains!
so, yeah... always second guess what the seller says and trust your gut!

Don't think that you will find everything you want in a house. There will be houses that are close, but not exactly what you imagined. You will compromise a lot, unless of course, you have unlimited funds! Don't stress too much. It can get frustrating.

Even if things look good on the surface and the inspection comes back good - there may be hidden problems with the house - We were shocked by how many we came across.

Oh My gosh, you poor thing! All of that happened in 2 months! 
I couldn't agree more, buying a house is the most stresful experience but it is one of the most rewarding and worth it in the end!
My advice:
-Be able to walk away
-Be willing to compromise on certain things - but don't on the things that you just can't live without (you'll end up regretting it in the end)

I totally agree! One of the major selling points to our house was that it was move in ready.... or so we thought!
Our first year in the house, were full of little and big and COSTLY surprises!
We had many instances of water in our newly finished basement, we still have to replace all the carpeting...
The hot water heater busted and again, water all over the basement
The garage door broke (one of the cables snapped) we were actually trapped in the house and couldn't go to work until someone came to fix it.
Underground drain pipe was cracked (which was causing the water problems in the basement)
had to have the dormered part of the house roof replaced totally, even down to the rafter beams because they were rotted.
Lots of rotting wood around the house (old house, water damage)
I know I'm forgetting stuff, but the first year was
