The stupidest pre-ER questions, ever!

1. Why can't I even have a sip of water during the night?

2. Do I have to wear warm, fuzzy socks like they suggest? Chat Icon I need new ones Chat Icon

3. What if I puke? Seriously I could puke from anesthesia.

4. Where will DH be during my ER? Can he watch, lol?

5. Should I bring a scrunchie?

6. My protocol doesn't say no makeup/nail polish/deodorant/lotion. Can I wear makeup? I don't want to scare the crap out of them. Chat Icon

1. Why can't I even have a sip of water during the night?

b/c you are put under. Its just a general rule

2. Do I have to wear warm, fuzzy socks like they suggest? Chat Icon I need new ones Chat Icon

they gave me some

3. What if I puke? Seriously I could puke from anesthesia.

I normally get sickly from anestesia, BUT they told me this kind doesnt do that. I was fine after. Peed, left and ate lunch then cabbed it back to Penn.

4. Where will DH be during my ER? Can he watch, lol?

I think mine was in a special waiting room, not in the ER. He was in the Transfer though.

5. Should I bring a scrunchie?

Yes, pony all the way, but thats just me.

6. My protocol doesn't say no makeup/nail polish/deodorant/lotion. Can I wear makeup? I don't want to scare the crap out of them. Chat Icon

Idk if they told me this. I think I just didn't wear makeup b/c I'm lazy. No jewelry though.

Re: The stupidest pre-ER questions, ever!

All good questions.

1. Why can't I even have a sip of water during the night?

A family member who is a physician told me they ask you not to drink but if you are perfectly healthy and had anesthesia before with no problems, its ok to have a sip or two (but no more than that) up to 3 to hour before ER. I had couple of sips of water when i left home to go to ER , that was three before. In fact, when I had laparoscopy, just before my procedure, nurse had me take tylenol wiith little bit of water.

2. Do I have to wear warm, fuzzy socks like they suggest? Chat Icon I need new ones Chat Icon

Its usually cold in the operating room so thick socks will keep you warm. They give you anesthesia as soon as they take you to the OR so there is not even enough time for you to be cold. In the recovery room, if you are cold, you can ask for warm blankets.

3. What if I puke? Seriously I could puke from anesthesia.

Some people do but this is considered a minor procedure and they give you just enough and most people don't have any problems.

4. Where will DH be during my ER? Can he watch, lol?

He will be in the waiting room and they come and get him when you are taken to the recovery room

5. Should I bring a scrunchie? I did once and didnt couple of times.

They give something to cover your hair so it doesn't matter. Its a personal preference.

6. My protocol doesn't say no makeup/nail polish/deodorant/lotion. Can I wear makeup? I don't want to scare the crap out of them. Chat Icon

At one practice I went to, they said no make up etc so I didn't. I am now at cornell and they didn't say anything. I did wear moisturizer on face but I saw couple of women who wore light makeup.

Re: The stupidest pre-ER questions, ever!

Every RE is slightly different so go by what your dr tells you. Here are my answers, to the best of my knowledge.

1. You can have a sip of water during the night or even in the morning. Just a sip. And only water. You shouldn't drink a whole cup but my dr said I can take my meds in the morning with a sip of water and I was fine.

2. My RE gave me a pair of hospital socks to wear with the grips. I don't think they'd let you wear your own socks into the ER b/c they aren't sanitized. The grips prevent you from slipping and getting hurt.

3. Chances are very low you'll puke. I woke up from the anesthesia and didn't feel any different at all. I wasn't tired or anything.

4. He'll be in the waiting room.

5. If you have a lucky scrunchie, then bring it! Chat Icon I had my hair down, the front pulled back with bobby pins, but then I had to wear a surgical hair covering anyway.

6. Embryos are very sensitive. The reason they say no scented lotions or oils is b/c they can damage your embryos or the other patients. Why chance it? No nail polish b/c while you're under, the anesthesiologist will watch your finger color to make sure you're getting enough oxygen. You will. But that's the reason.

Re: The stupidest pre-ER questions, ever!

Thanks everyone! The water question was because I have to hydrate my throat during the night sometimes.. so tonight is a bust. I was told not even to take a sip but I was wondering why.

Thanks for all of the advice! Chat Icon

1. Why can't I even have a sip of water during the night?
it has to do with the anesthesia and the slight slight chance of breathing issues when you are put under and have ANYTHING in your belly. i think i was allowed a little water though.

2. Do I have to wear warm, fuzzy socks like they suggest? Chat Icon I need new ones Chat Icon
never heard of this.

3. What if I puke? Seriously I could puke from anesthesia.
so what?

4. Where will DH be during my ER? Can he watch, lol?
doubtful. mine was in the waiting room. he came to meet me in recovery.

5. Should I bring a scrunchie?
sure, if you like your hair up ;)

6. My protocol doesn't say no makeup/nail polish/deodorant/lotion. Can I wear makeup? I don't want to scare the crap out of them. Chat Icon

I asked about the makeup they said it was ok. I thought the same thing. I even asked if I could use bodywash. Chat Icon

I was totally in the buff under my gown. I was so cold! They said I had to take off my socks. They gave me those hospital shoes and a shower cap thing so my hair was out of the way.

Honestly, it was only 10 minutes so fast. So, as soon as you fall asleep its time to get back up!

Oh and I had to take a IB propfin in the am so i had a sip of water and I lived to tell the tale.Chat Icon
