Its strange because everytime I go, I still can't find a freakin parking spot! I'm convinced Dave and Busters is the only reason that place still exists.

I do love me some Nordstrom Rack!

Seriously.. Nordstrom Rack is the only reason i'm there!! It's sad :(

Its greed...The owner of the building is asking way too much for rent!!! Money hungry people is what is putting these stores out of business...Chat Icon Chat Icon

ITA, Last year my DH was looking to move offices, we searched so many empty store fronts and office space that were available.

The owners would rather them sit empty then budge on the price of the rent.

Its funny office space we looked at 4 years ago, that we were trying to negotiate the price with the owner is still empty.

I feel like the landlords take the unrented property as a loss- so maybe it IS more cost effective for them to have a loss on their taxes than a profit?

We have this in Amityville Village on the 110 corridor- so many vacancies and yet the landlords won't budget on price!!

Oh Wait... Trader Joes... I just got a little excited!!!! Now I don't have to go to Merrick or plainview!

But still... I hate the congestion... I seriously avoid Old Country Road after Halloween b/c of all the traffic... its horrible living around here during that time of year!

I love the Source! It is depressing because of the lack of stores but I have the Gap Outlet, off 5th ave, and nordstrom rack.

At least there's always parking (in the parking garage).

Honestly, it's just an example of what's pretty standard in many parts of the country.

As much as the recession has hit here, the impact has been nothing compare to several other American cities.

My BIL recently was on business in Detriot. He was following the directions on the GPS to get to a law office and was convinced he was completely lost... the streets were deserted... every store for blocks and blocks bordered up and this was not considered a "seedy section" of town... imagine all businesses on Jericho Turnpike or Sunrise highway shut down for milesChat Icon

This is a really good point.

Back to NY, that area in Westbury/GC/Carle Place is so overbuilt that it's not surprising.

It's the same thing at Broadway Mall in Hicksville. When I go there the stores with the most action are Ikea, Target, and H&M - the retailers that I think a lot of people perceive as giving more value and having lower price points for their industry.

Don't laugh at me, but when I was in Rochester last year I was in Wegmans and pleaded to management that I had the perfect retail space for them.

The old Fortunoffs space, or at least a portion of it. Not only would it be a destination, there are tons of people that work in the area that would go there for lunch, they have a wine shop and restaurants as well. I would drive there from Great Neck to shop there. I would LOVE a Wegmans near us.

I know the rents are high, but when I called Trader Joes years ago when living in the city, they told me that they would NEVER open in NYC b/c of the rents. Never say never !! :)

How awesome would that be???

Re: The Source Mall is so depressing!

I heard that the owners want to tear it down and build condos, and that is why they won't negotiate on rent. They WANY everyone to leave.

Re: The Source Mall is so depressing!

I like going there for quiet shopping: Old Navy, Loft, and NY & Co. Now that Loft is opening at Roosevelt Field, I'm sure it won't be at the Source anymore. Also, for those of you who shop at Carter's for your kids, I just saw that they are opening one in the Nassau Mall, on Hempstead Tpke, where Michaels used to be before it moved.

Re: The Source Mall is so depressing!

I find it odd that they would want to spend so much money to tear down the Source to Build Condos.

That would be crazy. They need one or two big stores to come in there in order for the mall to survive.

I worked at Fortunoffs back in the day and that mall was booming. Fortunoffs was a huge store. Its sad that the children of the Fortunoff family drove that company into the ground. When I worked there the children just got control of the place and they had so many ideas including the french wine merchant, the Fortunoff watch store and the baby store. I worked in the french wine merchant also. I am surprised that didnt make it. They Fortunoff children were very hard on their employees and the old timers said there was such a difference in how they were running things. N one was happy. I am actually surprised they lasted longer than they did.

Um... the rent is not too high. It is reasonable, actually, but nobody wants to rent there because the place is empty.... but its empty because nobody wants to rent there...

They are not tearing it down to build condos! That could probably happen if they sold it, but Simon does malls - retail. They don't do housing.

So I wonder what will happen there. Just seems that a mall that size cannot survive on the few stores they have left.

Is the Gymboree outlet still open?

Before I had my 2nd DD we were there every week for Gymboree classes. I liked to hit up the kids stores in there even though it was depressing.

I am a little too excited that The Container Store is coming next door. It's about time LI got one!

I only go there to meet up with friends for dinner at Cheesecake Factory or PF Changs. Very hard to find a parking spot, even without all the stores that used to be there! Chat Icon Chat Icon
