So they have this hearing.
She fails miserable in it, apparently.

So now what?
Can they block her? Will they?

Not sure when but the Senate will vote to confirm or not. They are still submitting written questions and waiting for her ethics paperwork.

You can call Schumer and Gillibrand to express your opinion.

Has anyone that has been nominated NOT been confirmed in the past?

Because then, what the hell is the point of these hearings if not to weed out unqualified people?
Why waste time?

Well Jeff Sessions was not confirmed for judgeship in the past. Not sure how often but they were talking on cnn this morning about how conflicts and legal issues are more likely to be a real issue than not knowing the answers to questions. Last week they were debating whether tillerson would have enough votes if Rubio votes no. I do think it's more than just a formality.

It is more than a formality, but let's be realistic- they will all be confirmed, including her, because R's have a majority in the Senate and they still want to curry favor with Trump and most of them are putting party before country IMO.

You can call Schumer and Gillibrand and I may do it myself but I am pretty sure they will be no votes anyway. It's the people with Republican senators who do not want her who have the most influence and should get on the phone if they are concerned.

The Republican from Alaska seemed to at least have doubts. I'm hoping for a no from her and hoping there are some Republicans who maybe have strong ties to students with special needs who will think about voting no. I will be so upset if she gets confirmed.

http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/history-reveals-why-trump-s-cabinet-picks-could-fail-get-n704056

For the last four decades, Senate votes on a new president's Cabinet picks have largely been a civil affair. Since the Carter era, about three-quarters of each incoming president's first set of Cabinet picks have been approved unanimously by members of the United States Senate, and all but about a dozen have suffered only one or two dissenting votes. (Newcomers to American politics would be surprised to hear that all but two Republican senators gave a greenlight to incoming Secretary of State Hillary Clinton one day after President Barack Obama was inaugurated.)

JOHN TOWER - Secretary of Defense (47 yea, 53 nay)

Only once have members of the Senate voted to reject a first-term president's Cabinet nominee — and they did it to a former member of their own Capitol Hill club. Former senator John Tower of Texas, George H.W. Bush's pick for his first Secretary of Defense, was rejected by a vote of 47-53 after an extremely public debate about his personal life that scandalized those used to Washington's typical decorum.
...

So it does seem more like a formality than an actual vetting process.... Chat Icon

Re: The nominee for secretary of education...

She is so highly unqualified... and it's such a tremendously bad idea to put her in charge of education with her anti-public education agenda, which will of course mean she gets confirmed because I guess that's the prerequisite these days, to pretty much destroy everything.

She makes a wonderful politician though, dancing around questions without actually answering them.

Special needs kids will be at such a disadvantage with this lady in charge. Chat Icon

So if these hearings mean really nothing, then what happened to checks and balances?
So the president elect can put a serial killer in place and nobody can really do anything to stop it?

Our system is just sooooo flawed

Just another pay for play whore, just like the rest of his nominees. Yeah, he really put a lot of thought into his selections and is really showing how much he cares.

It's pretty pathetic that someone can sit there dodging questions, looking stumped, worried about grizzly bears Chat Icon Chat Icon and pretty much demonstrating BEYOND a shadow of a doubt just how unqualified she is and yet................will likely still be given this title. SMH.

Our country is so fcuked up and the incoming tweet head twit will do NOTHING except further problems and make things worse. How on earth this woman will be in charge of education in this country is SHOCKING to me.

To all of you Trump supporters out there who don't say "boo" anymore you should go and give yourselves a real big pat on the back for electing into office an unqualified idiot who will now reign hell down on us all through his AWFUL cabinet picks. Our poor children. Chat Icon Great job ignorant America. Chat Icon

This makes me naseous. IDEA is the entire reason I received an education, without it, I would have been segregated or at worst institutionalized.

I am scared. I can't see how any rational person could think she is the best person for this position. She avoided answering important questions.

Exactly-- pay to play whore is right. It is so obvious and just so pathetic. I thought she did horribly. Blank stares and fake smiles, bullshitting to the Nth degree when clearly she has NO CLUE what she's talking about.

I think she is a joke and I am adamantly against her taking the position. I also think King who is there currently is also an asshole so the education system has been screwed up for a while and it doesn't look like it's getting any better.

Just because I am a republican doesn't mean I have to agree with every single thing Trump proposes.

She has also not ruled out defunding public schools- see here.

The consensus is that she will be confirmed though. This one will impact all of us with children, and not in a good way. She left an absolute mess in MI, guess she wants to take it national. Charter schools are not the answer, especially if you have a child who learns differently.

Are ANY of his administration picks not pay for play? Linda McMahon, DeVos, Perry, Price, Pruitt, Mnuchin, Puzder...the list goes on and on.

This is one of the main things that grinds my gears about trump voters. The EXACT things that they vilified HRC for, are being done by trump. And you could have seen it coming from a mile away. Not to mention the SIX Goldman Sachs people on his team. But, HRC doing speeches for Goldman Sachs was the end of the world.

Can any trump supporter out there explain to me why it is ok for him to do these things, but it was abominable for her to? Not looking to flame anyone, just really don't understand the double standard.

First off let me start by saying I am not defending any of his choices and don't want a debate about each one.

I think you have the double standard backwards. Most people I know had no issue of Hillary meeting and working with these people but it was her double standard condemning Trump for doing it when she was doing the same thing all along so she was called out on it.

No I don't think its backwards at all. Hillary would never ever in a million years pick people like this, people who were so clearly ill equipped and uneducated about the roles they were taking on. And Trump is not "draining the swamp" like he promised his million of supporters. I am getting real tired of the "I'm a Trump supporter but I don't agree with everything he does" line because at the end of the day - with everything he is doing be so incredibly problematic and dangerous to our country - what is left for you to support?

I know some Trump supporters who were unconcerned about his total lack of knowledge about government because they thought he would surround himself with experienced, knowledgeable people. Well that's been a big no. Rick Perry didn't even know what the energy department was - he originally thought he would be representing oil and gas industries. Unbelievable. How again is this making America great?

Rick Perry also got C's in most of his science classes, and is replacing a man who has a PhD in, I believe, nuclear physics. Chat Icon Chat Icon
