Re: The end of the world.
If the world is slated to end in December.. could I stop it?
*insert long pause and jeopardy music*
I can't think of a single way I could change that.
SO what can I do? Be the best person I know how to be, pray for the best and keep living until I don't.
I could - after all - be hit by a bus today. There is just no use in fretting over something that I can't control. If these WERE my last days I wouldn't want to waste them crying and frittering anyway. :

Re: The end of the world.
As another poster said, I also believe that we can't know the day or the hour of the exact last day of the world. In that sense, I don't believe that the world will end on December 21.
Could these be end times? Maybe. If so, I interpret "end times" to go on for hundreds, maybe even thousands of years. I could be wrong. Maybe these aren't end times. All that I know is that I can't know for sure.

The end of the world.
No, I don't think so, but I do attribute a lot of this to global warming. This was the biggest Atlantic hurricane on record and the way storm turned towards the shore has never happened with a hurricane. I'm gonna watch an inconvenient truth again later....

No, I don't believe anyone can predict the end of the world. Also, just because it's the end of OUR world, I don't think it means the end of the Earth. I think this kind of stuff is the Earth purging itself. Some form of life will live on and evolve again until the cycle happens all over again.

A friend and I had this exact convo last night. Al Gore is sitting in a dark cabin somewhere rocking back and forth repeating "I warned them.....I warned them..."

No, because it's happening to US we are freaked and saying it's the end of the world.
Same thing happened with Katrina. Midwest gets tornadoes. Mother Nature is a scary b*tch
It's different when it's a 30 second blip on the news happening somewhere else. Now it's 24/7 on the news. So it feels more catastrophic.
Perhaps I'll pay my bill's late in december...just in case

Re: The end of the world.
FWIW- there is a planetary alignment predicted to happen on Dec 21, 2012 that has not occurred in thousands of years.
It's believed that this may cause a shift in the poles and wreak havoc on our technology.
I'm hoping that 12/21/12 isn't the day, but that doesn't mean that I'm not preparing myself for some major sh*t to go down.

All scientists agree that *if* the poles would shift, it would be gradual over hundreds of thousands of years or more. Planetary alignment would have no effect on Earth. Even the moon only moves the water a little bit, and that is super close to us.

Re: The end of the world.
I don't think the OP is saying Sandy happening + nor'easter = end of world. She's saying all these events add up...katrina, sandy, tsunami, haiti, more solar flares, animals dying and facing extinction, birds falling from the sky, whales beaching themselves, earthquakes, volcanic activity...another crazy thing thats been happening...Animals that have been notoriously known as herbivores have begun to eat meat. All these events are happening more frequently. I do think it has a lot to do with global warming but it's not solely due to greenhouse gasses. I think there are several factors working together to create the conditions we are experiencing...some are avoidable and some are not (earth has a natural cycle of warming and cooling).
I try not to get carried away in believing in some sort of apocalypse but at the same time...I think it my be naive to discount the mayans completely as they were undoubtedly one of the smartest, most accomplished, ahead of their time cultures. Their astronomy was so on point and much of their beliefs / findings on astronomy have been proven true to this day. Then there are other astronomers who have come to similar conclusions. So it definitely is interesting to know why so many roads lead to this time in 2012. But I do think it is important to know this does not mean it's the end of all civilization (depending on who does the interpretation) It could simply mean life as we know it...which could mean a multitude of things.

If you are talking about precession, I believe that it's been shown that precession takes 36 years and it started in 1980.. meaning that the closest the sun came to the center was 18 years after the start - Winter Solstice 1998. In 2016 the sun will have moved out of the alignment zone. But yeah.. a lot of mystics and some scientists do think there will an additional element of alignment during this particular solstice. BUT the question is.. how DO you prepare for the end of the world if it happens? I mean.. end is end.

OMG I have neve seen this before! Can you imagine the sodium in this? Anyone who survives the apocolpyse will be dead soon after from high blood pressure related illness!
But I love this line: . That makes these delectable entrèes perfect for everyday use on those occasions when you need a quick but elegant main dish
Yes, whenever I am serving an elegant meal, I always serve from the can!

Actually, it's very common. If you actually follow the weather and natural phenomenon around the world over the last 1000 years, you'll see that there's absolutely nothing unusual about what's happening, other than it's happening NOW to US. Next year, we'll think nothing of the average weather we're having, and Europe will think it's the end of the world. The following year, Europe's weather will be stable, and Brazil will think the weather is unusual......

Re: The end of the world.
Nah! For the past 2-3 years insurance companies have been dropping LI customers left and right. They knew we were due for a major hurricane because of some stat model they use. It's just a bad time for US. Not the end of the world
I will say approaching day 11 of no power and no heat feels very stressful and scary. I could see why people would worry about this

ITA with this. also, how do we know crazy bad weather stuff wasn't happening more hundreds and hundreds of years ago? we are living at a time when EVERYTHING is news. everyone finds out about everything, we have technology to detect, measure and report earthquakes and everything else. so it might seem like it's just more now when its been going on since the beginning of time. look at the bubonic plague in 14th century Europe-i'm sure folks thought that was the end of the world too.

the Mayan calendar didn't have leap years - there have been 514 since the leap year was created.
if we'd stuck with the Mayan calendar, we would be toward the end of 2013 - and we're still alive.
I was just going to post this.
