Thanksgiving dinner & costs....

do any of you currently host thanksgiving dinner at your house? I just wanted to get an idea of how much it costs and what items you usually buy. the other night, DH's grandmother called and kinda hinted that she would prob want us to host his dad's side of the family for thanksgiving. (16 people). feeding that many people i dont know how much it may run me if i do volunteer to do it... so any ideas will help! also what do you serve usually? TIA! Chat Icon

Re: Thanksgiving dinner & costs....

Delegate what people should bring! I've hosted the past 2 Thanksgivings (and Christmas!) and everyone brought something. The first thing you need to do is make a menu - turkey (maybe a meatless lasagna for non turkey eaters?) and then all the sides. Does your nearest supermarket do the free turkey if you spend $300? I know many of them do. If they do, make sure you have their rewards card so that after several weeks of grocery shopping you can get a FREE turkey. Buy stuff when it's on sale - cranberry sauce, chicken stock, marshmallows, stuffing, etc. You can easily get these items for all $1 or less.

Remember to tell people what to bring! Your ILs can make mashed potatos and stuffing or pies. Less work for you too!

Not sure if this really helps but I host Christmas and for the past few years we have had between 20-25 people. With alcohol, beverages and all the food I usually spend $4-500. I do not buy turkey for Christmas, in the past it was rib roast, last year I bought filet mignon which was so good.

I would imagine for 16 people with turkey, probably around $300 when it is all said and done.

I do around 16 people every year for less than $300 especially since most supermarkets give away a free turkey leading up to the holidays.

If you plan well, it could be done.

Re: Thanksgiving dinner & costs....

I'd say when its all said and done $500-$600 but I go overboard and buy a fresh turkey and I make way to many sides.

Sweet potato casserole
Carrot Casserole
regular mashed potatos ( or Au Gratin)
Cranberry sauce
Corn bread
fried artichoke hearts
stuffed mushrooms
clam dip

pumpkin pie

Im sure there is more Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Thanksgiving dinner & costs....

I have a huge family, so when you host you only provide the turkey, usually 2 and a breast, and then everyone else brings all the sides.
On the menu:
for apps we only do crackers and cheese and raw oysters
turkey
broccoli casserole
sweet potato casserole
mashed potatoes and gravy
2 types of stuffing- sausage and oyster
green bean casserole
cranberry
carrots with onions
peas
sauerkraut
rolls
pies: pumpkin, sweet potato, apple, mincemeat, pecan

I would do this - people really don't mind and then you can make sure you a mix of desserts, sides, etc. Also have each couple bring a bottle of wine, that is what would really add to your expense....

thanks all! we told his grandmother we would host it. i'll look for stuff that goes on sale but if you could suggest sides that seem to go over well in addition to what was suggested (i know i'll probably make mashed potatoes and stuffing for sure) that would be great! thanks!
