Terrible retrieval experience today
Hi ladies, I am a sometimes "lurker" of this site ond often feel encouraged and inspired by your brave stories. Thank you for being so honest and sharing your experiences.
On that note, I have never wanted to share my infertility journey as much I do today. I have undergone 2 IVF cycles in the past 2 years and am currently in the middle of #3. Today was my first retrieval with a new doctor and so far everything has been wonderful. However, today when I got to my appointment, I thought it was unusual that I was waiting for so long to get started, as you know this is a timed thing. So finally I get called into the OR and then they sprang it on me.....the anesthesiologist (sp?) did not show up and won't be there in time before my eggs release!!! So basically I was told I could do it without the anesthesia or I would lose my eggs :( Of course I did it, but it was seriously traumatizing and at times very painful. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I have been in tears all day.

i'm so sorry you had such a horrible experience. i can't even imagine how painful that must've been  would you mind sharing the dr you go to and the lab you use? if you don't want to post it, can you FM me? i hope you feel better soon and i hope they were able to get a good amount of eggs!

What doctor do you go to?! I am so sorry you went through that!! I hope they got a ton of eggs. On a side note, if you pay out of pocket, I would DEMAND money back for this cycle.

OMG!! I am so sorry!!  That sounds horrible and inhumane even!!  I remember I had around 50 follicles, I can't imagine having that many drained while awake! I don't even know what to say!

In all my experience, I have NEVER heard of such a thing. I am livid for you. There wasn't an Anesthesiologist on call for instances like this? There's no back up plan for emergencies? Did they plan on coming in hours late? Did they cut it close to your release for a reason? They administered no medication, not pain meds or anything? In my opinion, this is completely uncalled for and I would put up a big stink (not only ask for compensation) for the pain, trauma, but for the lack of a plan. Definitely pursue this further and read the fine print on your consent forms. Do you mind sharing which lab this was with and who your Dr. is?

Thanks for all of your responses....I thought I might just have been feeling bad for myself! It was pretty messed up, right? Luckily (at least in this case) I am a poor responder and only had 6 eggs, but it still was excruciating to me. Had I had a lot of eggs, I don't know what they would have done.
I am in no way looking to bash my doctor....I have been very happy with him and his staff. They have all been wonderful through this cycle and were unaware of this, as the procedure took place in a different location. I mean, I understand that unexpected things happen sometimes, but COME ON!!! I seriously could have done without that!
Do you really think this warrants a discount for the retrieval? I have full coverge, but dr is out of network so I still pay a percentage.
Again, thanks for all the well wishes  I'm looking forward to some healthy embies and a smooth transfer!

OMG! That is insane! I am so sorry you had to go through that. Unbelievable, and yes I would definitely ask for a discount that is totally unacceptable.

I know you said you didnt want to call out your doctor, but how about the location that performed the procedure?
Regardless, Im so sorry to hear this- it sounded traumatic! I hope that you are able to get a happy ending!

I am so terribly sorry for your awful experience!! That is just unacceptable and I am so upset for you! If you don't mind, can you please FM me the name of the dr. or the location? My dr. uses an outside location for the retrievals and transfers as well and I'm concerned it could possibly be the same place. Best of luck to you and I hope your transfer goes much more smoothly!!

That is absolutely disgusting and unacceptable behavior on the part of the lab! I am so sorry that you had to go through that. I hope that you let your doctor know what happened, as he should strongly reconsider using them as his lab. Would you mind FMing me and letting me know who the doctor and lab were, as my doctor also uses an outside lab?
