Telling work...esp for educators
SO I have my 12 week appointment this Wednesday. Which is exciting but also means I have to tell work
I am due October and plan to take the rest of the school year.
Should I tell her I am pregnant AND my intentions to take off the remainder of the school year w/plans to return the following Sept. (Although that is not 100% I am may stay our longer--I have to see how I feel / finances).
Or do I just tell her I pregnant and then tell her later?
I have never done this lol TY

Re: Telling work...esp for educators
You don't have to tell anything until you are ready,,,with my first, I didn't tell work until 18 weeks. I also would NOT say that you are taking the whole year. This was advice given to me by my union. Say you are going to take the 12 weeks and then when the time comes, apply for FMLA. For some odd reason, if you had to come back at 12 weeks (financially or something for YOU) you would still have that option.

Problem w/this is the AP is my friend and she knws I plan to take the year.
I have a good relationship w/my Principal and was planning to "train" my replacement (I am guidance). I feel terrible lying and leaving them in the lurch..kwim???

Re: Telling work...esp for educators
I think you need to keep your options open as long as you can. You can simply say that you are undecided about the full year, since there is a tiny bit of uncertainty there.

Re: Telling work...esp for educators
I told my principal at 13 weeks after the NT scan. I didn't talk to her about leave at all, she didn't ask. Just told her my EDD. I then had to meet with my superintendent a few days later. When I met with him, he asked my plans and I told him I planned to take the rest of the school year (I'm due in May) and told him that I was still undecided about the following year; my husband and I needed to discuss it further. I didn't want to blindside him or get myself in a situation where I couldn't come back so I left that door open.
I think that he appreciated my honesty because so many people lie and then the district is screwed. I realize you have to do what's best for you but it's important for them to know too because they need to hire someone.
We had someone in my district get tenure in June while she was pregnant but not due until late September. She never told them she wasn't working up until her due date. She came in on the first Superintendent's Conference day (tog et her tenure) and at the end of the day went to the principal's office and told him she wouldn't be returning for the rest of the year. IMO, that's just wrong.

Re: Telling work...esp for educators
My district is going through major cuts this year so our union just notified us to meet with the head of our union before taking any leave of absense including maternity leave because it can effect your seniority. With DS I was upfront with my principal and told her I would be out until LO was 3 months. This time I'm talking with my union rep first.

Re: Telling work...esp for educators
I told this week (10 weeks) just my principal b/c I've been so sick and missed work for appts and I never miss work, so she asked if I was okay. She asked me how long I was taking off, I answered, but I'm not in a public school, we only get 12 weeks, so if I was taking the whole year off at a public school I would not share that yet.

Re: Telling work...esp for educators
I have never discussed length of leave with them until I actually had the baby.
I would just tell them your due date and say you plan to take off at least your FMLA time and need to discuss any further time with your husband when the time comes.
