Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

I know I did! When the kids were little and in the carriage, I would put items in the bottom and pay for those, but would forget an item of two that was tucked in the hood of the carriage! I always went back, but sheesh...it was never my intent to steal the items!

And forget about the items my kids lifted from shelves and I didn't even notice!

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

I remember when I was on maternity leave I went to McDonalds drive through for a shake and fries. I ordered at the first window and had the money on my lap to give to the girl at the second window. When I got to the second window i took my food and drove off. I didn't realize until I got home that the money was still in my lap. I was way too tired to go back. Still haunted by the fact I stole $3.14 from Micky D's.

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

YES!

Here's the worst one, and I still feel guilty about it. I was at B&N when my middle child, now 5, was an infant. I had the stroller, and while I was deciding which book to buy I was putting the books that were contenders in the basket of the stroller, with the diaper bag. When I was done shopping, I put the books that I didn't want back, and brought the book that I did want to the register, paid, and left. No alarms went off.

Well, apparently, one of the books that I decided not to buy got thrown into the diaper bag. I had 2 diaper bags, a big one that I didn't use a lot and a little one. It fell into the big one, which I didn't use again for almost 2 weeks. When I looked into it, I realized what happened. I called B&N and they told me not to worry about it, that it was probably taken off the inventory already, or whatever, and it would be more of a nuisance to figure it out if I came in and tried to pay for it.

I still feel guilty about it, and I could never bring myself to read the book.

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

I did I bought a supersized pack of toiletpaper and was too lazy to pull it out of the cart and on the belt because it was so big and I assumed that the lady would just scan it since it was so obvious. I got a call as I was getting checked out, paid and left the store. When I was pulling into my driveway I realized that my total had only come to like $5 but didn't think about it then because I was on the phone. I felt bad but I wasnt going to drive back to the store. Now I always make sure I check that they ring everything up even if it's obvious.

Yes - recently, I took a thing of paprika from the store - it was in the front part of the cart and it was wedged in a place I didn't see it during check out.

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

I've done it before with the stroller too, but I don't remember specifically so it must have been small.
But also recently I was buying a ton of groceries and I was bagging, but the cashier took some stuff and put it in the bag by her register that she then forgot to give to me. I didn't realize until I tried to make dinner that night and some of the stuff I had wanted to use was missing. I figure it evens out Chat Icon

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

OMG I almost did this yesterday at Target Chat Icon

I went in to buy containers to store DS's clothes in that he no longer wears. On my way to that section - I grabbed a pair of leggings and threw them into the cart.

I placed 6 big storage containers on top of them. I than walked around the store and placed all the other items I was buying inside the containers.

When I got to the register to pay - I paid for all the items inside the containers, but only lifted the first one so the cashier could scan the barcode 6 times.

On my way out - the security card stopped me asking me if I wanted the clothing item at the bottom of my cart. I was so embarrassed and told him - I forgot they were there because I didn't lift all the containers out of the cart. He believed me, but watched as I paid for the leggings Chat Icon

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

I have.

I once walked out with a brick of cheese. I was holding it in my hand the whole time I was being rung up and the girl never noticed it and I didn't even think about it until I got to the car. I also walked out of the store with 2 12 packs of beer under the cart once. Both times I went back in to make it right.

One time I drank an entire bottle of juice in the store (I was pregnant and suddenly faint from a blood sugar drop). I totally forgot about it when I checked out and didn't even think about it until I was home and took the juice container out of the drink holder. I did not go back and pay for it.Chat Icon

I once walked out of Rite Aid with a hand mixer that I had decided not to buy. I went back in as soon as I realized it & put it on the shelf. No one noticed.

DH walked out of CVS with wrapping paper, wrapped a present & THEN realized he stole it! He took the wrapper back to pay for it & thoroughly confused the cashier. Chat Icon

My grandma walked out of a store with a purse on her shoulder. We got like 2 blocks away and she realized and went back to return it.

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

I don't know if I would call it shoplifting as I gave the clerk my cc. I went to TRU to get a toy kitchen. I stood in the check out line and gave the cashier my credit card, but he was called over to help someone else and in the rush of things handed me back my card without swiping it. I did not notice it. He helped me get it in my car. A few days later I went to look for the receipt but realized I did not get one. I called TRU and explained the situation. I gave the woman my cc over the phone. They billed me for 1/2 the cost. As she said I could have kept it and they never would have known. I was happy that I got it for 1/2 price. I ended up returning it as I found a nicer one for less than the 1/2 price I paid.

Honestly, no. I have never taken something, even accidentally. However, I have been with DH when he forgot to pay for a small bottle of water that he took and started drinking while I was shopping the store. I checked out with the stuff I was buying and he was still browsing. When I was done, we left, and he never paid. He didn't realize until he drove halfway back to our house that no one paid for the water. Whoops!

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

2 things have happened recently.

First one, I went to target and was shopping around. I had put a container of yogurt in the cart and a bunch of other things, like clothes in the top part bc I didn't want the condensation to be on the clothes or cards or whatever else I was buying. I forgot to take it out of the basket when I checked out. I spent well over 80 bucks so I didn't even realize or remember...until the security guard stopped me and pulled it out of my cart Chat Icon he was like "did you want to pay for this" I was like yea I just forgot about it. I attempted to take it from him so I could walk back over to a register and pay but he refused to hand it to me, insisting on walking it over to a cashier and having her ring it up Chat Icon Chat Icon as if I would take it from him and run out the door.

The second involved my DH. Someone using his name was arrested for stealing CHEESE! really? I guess they are cracking down on people, but the guy who was arrested spent the night in jail FOR CHEESE!! Chat Icon DH had to go to court to show id and prove it wasn't him which was a hassle, but at least he was vindicated. I just can't imagine stealing cheese and then giving a false identity! People are cookoo these days (and I wish we had an icon where the person was doing the cookoo sign) LOL Chat Icon

Re: Tell the truth....how many of you have "shop lifted" by mistake?

it happened to me twice.. both were honest mistakes.

one was a case of bottled water that I stashed under the cart, and completely forgot about it, and the other was a huge bag of cat litter- same story.
