Tell me about...
These areas, if you don't mind.
Background: We have just started our house hunt, as first time buyers. I'm not from NY, DH grew up in Hewlett. Hewlett is out of our price range right now but we would like to be close to my ILs in Hewlett and DH's family business (in Lynbrook). I have been doing research on my own because DH isn't knowledgeable about these areas but I think they are our best options right now.
East Rockaway Oceanside Lynbrook Malverne
Thoughts? Other suggestions? I commute to the city so we need to be on a good LIRR line and fairly close to the train.
Thanks!

Re: Tell me about...
most of my family lives in Lynbrook, it is a nice town with good schools, and convenient to NYC (you can take the train both on long beach and babylon lines).

Hey!! Isn't this all exciting?!?!
Here's what I know...obviously jmo
Oceanside and Lynbrook are nice-I prefer Oceanside, but it's not something I could really explain..
East Rockaway I don't know much about
Malverne I would stay away from-we looked in RVC for a bit, but the houses were zoned to Malverne and we immediately crossed them off
If you want to stay on the South Shore, what about Merrick? It's a beautiful neighborhood, and often the night trains have an express straight to Merrick..plus it's close to both the Southern State and Meadowbrook (exit 24 off SS)

Re: Tell me about...
My SIL lives in Oceanside now. She has no complaints but she doesn;t have kids so Im not sure how the schools are.
DH grew up in Malverne and the area is nice. Cute houses. People have concerns about the school because it is diverse. DH and his sister loved going to school there. They never had any issues with drugs or crime and both ended up with a great education. I however went to a "good" school and had tons of crime and drugs. So don't always go by the reputation.

Thank you for this! I love some of the houses in Malverne and think it is a very cute town, but keep hearing comments about the school district. I appreciate your insight!
Thanks for all the comments so far!

Re: Tell me about...
Check out the Long Island board over at City-Data.com. Just run a search for each of those areas and you should hit a few interesting threads.
Take a few hours to just sift through all those messages and a picture will emerge on what areas you should target.. Here on LIF, there is much potential for drama just by narrowing in on certain areas for fear or hurting someone else's feelings or having the discussion derail into a bunch of anecdotes about crime, demographics, school districts being bad/good, etc.. C-D tends to have more honest feedback without the emotional overtures of LIF..

Thanks! Definitely don't want to start drama. We zeroed in on those areas solely for their proximity to my ILs and DH's business, as well as the availability of homes in those areas in our price range. Thanks for the tip

Re: Tell me about...
I grew up up in Lynbrook, still live here and am currently looking to buy a house with FH here as well. The Lynbrook school district is one of the best on the entire island. You will get that small town vibe where everyone knows everybody and everybodys business but it is better in my opinion than Oceanside where the town is so huge and spread out. I like that there isn't a lot of big commercial businesses like Oceanside has because it prevents unnecessary traffic but traffic in Lynbrook around 5:00 is brutal when everyone is commuting home from work. East Rockaway is nice, preferably if you are zoned for Lynbrook schools. Be careful in East Rockaway because many homes require additional flood insurance and many of the homes that were on the market a few months ago got wrecked with water damage and had their entire basements flood out..MOLD warning!! We saw house after house putting their soggy couches and furniture to be picked up after Irene. Also, just my opinion, I absolutely live the village of Malverne, the houses are so cute but I would never send my children to school there, so unless you have an additional 5,000 for private school tuition on top of extremely high taxes as well....about 10-13k I would stay out of that town. The schools have problems because you have the kids from Lakeview that have no regard for rules or authority, and yes, these kids predominately are black and that's why many families who live in Malverne choose to send their children to private school. To me it is not really a racial thing it is more to protect the safety of your child and it just so happens that more often than not it is the black children from Lakeview that cause the most disturbances. Hewlett is also another great school district and offers full time pre-k which is a reason why the taxes are so high in the district. Any questions, fm me.

Re: Tell me about...
We live in lynbrook now. Actually we are in the process of selling if you want more info.
We are selling to move out east.
Anything you want to know you can ask!
We are Lynbrook, East Rock SD. We are south of sunrise, do not need flood insurance and in fact have never had a water issue in our basement. We are no where near water and let's put it this way....got thru hurricaine irene without one problem! My DH commute to Penn everyday and its about a 35 min commute. (he walks to the train- CentreAve station).
We are about 5 min to oceanside where I do a lot of my shopping. There is sooo much shopping over there its awesome, but I like to come back to the quietness in lynbrook. Any other info I would be happy to share!!
And if you are interested in looking I can give you info on my house as well

Re: Tell me about...
My parents live in E.R but are zoned for Lynbrook SD. I graduated from Lynbrook and feel like I got a good education. My parents would not have bought in E.R if they weren't zoned for Lynbrook schools. We are currently living with my parents while we close on a house and my DH commutes into the city everyday. The train line is fabulous b/c both the Babylon and Long Beach lines run through Lynbrook train station. Also the Hewlett train station is a quick drive! It is wonderful to have the many options for the commute.
We are buying in Merrick just to have a little space between us and many relatives but I would have no issues buying a house in Lynbrook if that wasn't the case. Other than the very high taxes (living in the village adds almost $3,000 a year to your taxes) Lynbrook is a great town.

Re: Tell me about...
I think that whole area is so congested.
I would consider going a little east.
Merrick/Bellmore..stay south of Sunrise.
