Teenage girls
I am watching the movie "Odd Girl Out" on Lifetime. I remember going through this in 7th and 8th grade. "Autumn" was the ring-leader girl in our group.
Are teenage girls still as horrible to one another as they were back then?
I can imagine it's probably a lot worse with the internet and texting.

Re: Teenage girls
I teach that age and sadly there are still "Mean Girls'
I do think schools try to be more aware and take pro-active steps, but they can still be awful to each other.
IMing causes A LOT of problems- they also all have innapropriate screen names like "hotgirl" etc etc

Re: Teenage girls
yes! its even worse!! AND it starts younger... i work in an elementary school, and you wouldn't beleive the things these girls are saying to each other- at 9 or 10 years old!!! they're ridiculus!! its actually sad.... haha kinda funny story- I can't have bio kids, so DH and i plan to adopt. so we can pretty much "pick" a boy or a girl. DH said he wanted a girl... i totally want a boy! they seem like they would be so much easier, so much more laid back and less petty. i don't have the patience to go through the petty girl stuff again! LOL

Re: Teenage girls
I teach middle school and honestly with the cell phone and texting, parents have NO supervision over what their kids are doing, and quite frankly some have no clue......
The kids are given an 'independence' that we didn't have growing up, and they are too immature to make decisions for themselves and thus make poor ones.
You really have to 'see it to believe it' I am terrified to be the mother of a teen one day!

Funny you say this..... We are currently TTC and I was just at parent conferences last week talking to the mother of a girl who was passing 'suggestive' notes to a boy...... and the very thing that was going through my mind was, "I hope I have twin boys"

Re: Teenage girls
Middle school guidance counselor here--mean girls are alive and well--- I spend a lot of my time mediating them.
I worked in HS as well and MS is much worse IMO
The internet, texting makes everything worse although a lot of the parents I work with try to monitor it

I have two sisters in middle school, as well as 4 nieces in elementary and I was an attorney for children.
Things definitely aren't changing and if they are, for the worst. There is more competition to keep up with the Joneses with cell phones and fashion. Better yet, IM, Facebook, MySpace-I have seen them used for posting inappropriate pictures and for making fun of people/harassing others. It is a nightmare because it is really easy for a child to figure out this stuff behind their parent's backs!

I do, too. I actually take her phone and laptop away at night because I don't like not knowing what's going on. FB and texting make it so much more intense.

Re: Teenage girls
yup i teach 7th graders and they are so mean to each other. We found actual burn books a few times like the one in the movie mean girls. A lot of parents have no idea what their kids are doing and have absoultely no control over them. Its really sad for me to see parents that are actually scared of their prre-teen kids

Re: Teenage girls
I was just at my friends daughter's birthday party. 8 year old girls --- the crying and fighting that went on the entire time of the party was ridiculous.

Re: Teenage girls
Seventh grade mom here and mean girls are very much alive and well.
My daughter does not have a FB account, doesn't IM but does have a cell phone (that I do check).
The only defense as a parent is to keep them active and know all the other parents.
My daughter plays tennis, lacrosse and basketball; is an A student; is involved in community service; girl scouts and goes to religion classes. I stay as involved as possible with all her activities. I honestly believe that its way more important at this age than when they are little.
And did I mention that I pray a lot
