Teal Pumpkin Project

You would not have believed the backlash this caused from media reports getting the information wrong. Many articles stated that FARE (The organization that developed the Teal pumpkin project) wanted to completely replace candy with non-food treats which was not the case. It was really sad reading the comments people made, saying how Food Allergy families are trying to destroy Halloween, threatening to egg houses displaying teal pumpkins and worse....

I never heard of this and am intrigued. I commend the inclusion and sensitivity.

I am curious though are there allergies out there where not one type of candy is ok for certain kids?

As a child of the 70s and 80s with peanut, egg and chocolate allegy not one special accomodation was ever made for me! I never even ate my own bday cake or cupcakes!! I dont ever remember feeling bad and was able to eat plenty of candy and junk food though. So, I'm wondering are there allergies out there now that equal NO candy whatsoever!?!

Did not see any teal pumpkins. None of my allergy friends knew about it. I have both candy and non food things. I just asked if anyone wanted non candy things if they couldn't have the candy.

Teal Pumpkin Project

While I like the idea of the teal pumpkin, it is really very confusing unless every single person going trick or treating understands what it means. Maybe it would just be simpler to put up a sign that says "if you have food allergies, please let me know" and then just have some pencils, tattoos, whatever as a backup.

We gave out tattos as well as non-allergy candy, but did not put out a teal pumpkin. I didn't see any on her trick or treating.

For kids like mine and many others, there is no such thing as allergen free candy :( Thank you for offering a non-food item!

I hadn't heard of it so we didn't participate but I would in the future (although I only got 2 TOTers).

For those who are dealing with food allergies, we TOT in Patchogue village and they do a great event. We go through the stores and the kids get both candy and a token which is a little toy. After you collect the tokens you can go to the coffee shop and the teacher's union gives them a prize. Last year DD got a puzzle and a magnadoodle and this year she got a full sized coloring book, crayons, and a little doctor kit. It's really cute and she doesn't mind at all that I confiscate her candy once we get home bc she still has tons of goodies to play with.

Thank you! We're not too far from Patchogue so we'll definitely do that next year.

Yes, both of my children have a severe corn allergy. There is nothing safe for my kids unless I make it in my kitchen.

That's awesome! What time does this start? We live close and had no clue!

They start at 3. The stores that participate put a pumpkin, witch, or ghost up in their window but it really is almost all of them. Then you go to Roast for the big prize. It's a lot of fun and DD took home a ton of loot this year!

Awesome!! I'll definitely remember this for next year!!

I never heard of this, and my DS has nut allergies. Several of our neighbors offered non-food and non-candy treats on their own though, which was really nice. Halloween is tough for our allergy kids, that's for sure!

I didn't see any either. I was planning on doing it but we weren't going to be home so I just left out a bowl (I didnt think the older kids would realize to leave it for those with allergies. )
