Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
Hi. If you are a teacher or have a similar schedule (summer's off etc.) what do you do for daycare? How does it work in the summer? How much do you pay? Do you pay for breaks like spring and winter break? Do you have the option of going part time?
If you have a daycare in Nassau county that you like please recommend it. I thought I had this all figured out but things have changed. Please share any information you have. I can't afford to have someone come into my home. I know that is very expensive. This is for an infant by the way. Thanks ladies!

Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
I work for DOE. All the daycare that I looked into required a contact for the year. I pay even when I keep my DS home for the week. He is 8 months. Started daycare at 12 weeks. For the summer, I have to pay for 2 weeks to hold my spot for September. I use precious kids in merrick.

I work for the doe as well. I do not have to pay for summers, but I do pay for school breaks. I started sending dd at 6m... she is now 2. I don't know where you live, but I send her to daycare in Merrick. If that is close, pm and I can send you info.

I'm a teacher but I work for an agency so I don't get paid for breaks. But I do have to pay daycare for every school break. It kills us!! I don't pay for summer though.

The center I go to caters to teachers but has other clients as well. We pay in full for all breaks except summer. Over the summer, we pay about 50% to hold our spot. The owner said the first year he was open he didn't charge but then he wound up having to lay off some of his staff. So I think it'll be difficult to find a center that 100% caters to teachers.

Our center used to let you not go in the summer but I send my kids then for a minimum because it's like camp and keeps them familiar-we pay monthly so you end up paying over breaks, etc.

I use an in home babysitter-she has a few kids and is wonderful. full time she's comparable to centers, but part time she's very reasonable, and we only pay days we go-so you may be able to find something similar. We love ours!

Re: Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
When your kid gets a bit older, that's ideal for preschool. You will need someone for emergencies, but I call my kid's preschool coverage "extremely part time"

Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
Other issue is drop off time. Some places don't have an early enough drop off time. I work in Queens and need to be on the road before 7am. At least my DH is able to do drop off but not everyone has that option.

Re: Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
My friend is a teacher, she is using kiddie academy in farmingdale in the fall, from what she told me, she doesn't have to pay for summer but she has to pay 1/2 for school break weeks. Otherwise I think your best bet is to find a home daycare that works with a teachers schedule. Good luck!

I am a teacher and I pay a mom who watches kids out of her home to watch mine. I pay $50 per day and I don't pay when he doesn't go (school vacations, sickness etc). I will send him this year one day a week for the summer, but I don't have to.

Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
I sent my older DD to an in home babysitter. She wasn't cheap -$80/day and unlicensed - but I didn't pay for holidays, summer, or any day I just didn't send her. I loved her and she was wonderful to my daughter. She's in West Hempstead, FM if you want her info

Re: Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
I used to babysit in my home and only watched teachers kids. I got paid $10 an hour and only charged for when I had the kids (no paid holidays or anything like that). Try Care.com

My DD will be going to Kiddie Academy in Farmingdale come September. She is due at the end of April and I'm a teacher, who won't be going back this school year. I don't have to pay for the summers (they hold your deposit money in "escrow" which reserves your spot) and you get 2 weeks a year where you pay 1/2 price when your child doesn't attend. For the other breaks, you do have to pay full price, but you would have the option of sending your child those weeks -- if you wanted to stick to your regular schedule you could, or maybe send them only in the AM's so you could run errands/do whatever you need to do that might be easier without kids, or send them 1, 2, 3 days rather than the entire week. This was by far the best and most accommodating place I found for teachers so I jumped at it when I had the chance.

I work in Queens too- DOE. DH can drop off after 8. Ideally I'm looking for 8:30- 4ish.

Thanks for the info! There is a center near my house. How much are you paying per/day or week? I sent them an information request.

Re: Teacher's Schedule and daycare/babysitting options
I think MATTS in syosset has an option called the teachers special. They don't go on school vacations, or summer and they have to be picked up by 4. My coworkers wife is a teacher and they use them.
