Tamiflu?
My DH had the flu last week and now my DD (4yrs) has it. she went to the doc yesterday.
I also have a 2 yr old DD.
My doc didn't recommend tamiflu for my 2yr old. is this the norm??? i don't want her to get it, but feel like keeping them apart, hand washing, lysoling, is fighting a losing battle.
when i asked he said they normally don't do anything preventative besides the flu shot.
Neither of them got the shot.

Re: Tamiflu?
I may be wrong- but I don't think Tamiflu prevents the flu. I think you take it once you have been diagnosed with flu- to shorten the length and severity. No?

Yeah that's what I heard.
But I thought you had to have Tamiflu within 48hrs of the onset to be effective? otherwise its useless.
But maybe its the age? I can't remember but I thought AJ was 2 when she got the flu and they would have given her tamiflu if it hadn't already been too late.

I think she was asking why the dr didn't give Tamiflu to the 2 year old who is NOT sick- to prevent her from catching it from the 4 year old. I don't think that is what Tamiflu is for though.

Re: Tamiflu?
We had the flu at our house - oldest DS tested positive for Type A so ped prescribed Tamiflu for 3yo and 4yo but neither would take it (either refused to swallow or vomited shortly after) -- seemed to be a waste IMO because like a PP said, it needs to be taken within the first 48hrs of the symptoms.
DH then went to his primary the same day and he prescribed it as a prophylaxis treatment for him.

Tamiflu?
If your 2yo doesn't have the flu yet they would not give tamiflu. Tamiflu is for when you have the flu. You take it in the first 48 hrs and it just lessens the flu. It is not a cure or prevention.

Re: Tamiflu?
You can also take tamiflu to prevent getting the flu or getting it bad. I was exposed to the flu when I had DS. Nurse on my floor had it. They prescribed me Tamiflu to take as a precaution. A lot of dr's will give it to family members of someone who has the flu.. It lessens the severity of the flu..

Tamiflu?
My 7 month old was diagnosed with type A flu. The pediatrician wrote prescriptions for my husband and 3 year old daughter to get tamiflu. I can't take it because I'm nursing. Apparently there is different dosing instructions whether you're taking it preventively or to lessen the effects of the flu.

Not true. Ds got the flu last Friday and was put on Tamiflu. Dh and I both got it as a prophylaxis. Both of us has not gotten the flu from my ds.

Re: Tamiflu?
I wouldn't let my kids touch Tamiflu with a ten foot pole. Google the side effects- esp. in children- and esp. confusion.
My whole family had flu 3 weeks ago. We lived through it.

Re: Tamiflu?
Thanks everyone. It seems some doctors give it and others don't. It's not that we won't "live" through the flu, its the amount of days i'm missing from work in order to live through.
