the marine asked for one for his birthday.
i have no idea what's out there and what the average cost is. gonna start some research today, but i also thought to ask here.

I have a Samsung Galaxy tab S that I got September 2015.
I don't have a data plan for it, use wi-if or if needed, use my phone as a hot spot. I find it easy to use for FB, here, news sites, streaming movies or music. Takes great pictures too.

We also got a Samsung Galaxy tab for my DD.
I couldn't justify the insane amount of money they want for an ipad - to give to a 4 year old at the time,
As it is, she dropped it and shattered the screen once. I would have freaked if I had spend $500 and up on an ipad.
It's great for her needs. We use it too for quick surfing of the net, pandora music which we sync to a bluetooth speaker and play music in the house and yard, etc

I have the Kindle Fire. 10 Inch
I also have the iPad mini.
DH has the Galaxy tab.
Out of all these, the Kindle is my favorite. But it depends on what it's used for. For me, reading and browsing is what I use the Kindle for.
If he is going to use it for Skype and pics, then definitely the iPad or Galaxy tab.

I probably would get an Ipad.
What kind of phone does he have? If he has an Iphone, I would definitely get the iPad. You can get a mini 2 for less than 300.

What does he want to do with it? Is it a computer replacement, where he'll be doing a lot of stuff on it, or is it more of a big phone, for casual web browsing and some apps?
I have an old 10" tablet, and a couple of 7" ones of various Android brands, and everyone prefers the 7" over the 10", which surprised me.
I would stick with a 7" unless he plans on using it as his primary device.
I would also probably stick with the OS that he has on his phone. It's a lot easier having matching apps and setups when it's the same OS on both devices.

That is great advice.
I prefer the Samsung tablet because I have a Samsung phone so I'm much more comfortable on Android and they are like the same thing just in different sizes.
If I had an iphone I'd prefer an ipad I am sure
Just easier to go back and forth between the 2

It would depend on his preference to android/apple. We are an apple family so we use iPads. And watch for good deals, we got our kids iPad minis for $200 and came with a $50 gift card at target, so we got them good cases there as well. My DH gets a new one each year from his company, and I don't see a difference from my older model and his new one.

He said he wants it mostly for drawing.
I'm very happy to hear that this is the reason. He hasn't done much art in a long time.

I have the iPad Air and it serves me well. My son plays on it and hasn't broken it (yet). I would get one with more gigs if I were to buy a new one. 16 gigs goes quick
