talk to me about men's suits... update 1st post

my son is about to begin his senior year in high school! oy vey Chat Icon

i want to buy him a suit for many of the formal events coming up.

where do i begin?
where should i go?
how much should i expect to spend?

UPDATE:

i'm happy to say that this thread helped me out so much.

we went to macy's to check out the sales.
we ended up getting an alfani black, single breasted suit.

the service was AMAZING!

the tailor was the BEST!
he even had DS laughing. even before i suggested it, he noted that he would leave extra fabric in the jacket and in the hem just in case DS continues to grow... how awesome is that!

we got:
* the suit
* the tayloring
* a pair of suspenders
* dinner because it was already 8pm

and

i got home with $1 left over!!!

woo hoo!!

and my mother promised to take him shirt/tie shopping!

now, all we need are dress shoes!

i'm a happy mom

Macys

no idea of pricing, but we've had good luck for DH there - they take the time to measure you properly and will tailor the suit to fit him well.
The guys there have always seemed to know what they're doing.

There;s always K&G as well - they are more discount, but for a growing kid, that might be your best bet

Re: talk to me about men's suits

suits run the gammit so it actually helps if you set a budget.

Dh has gotten $400 suits at Lord & Taylor that wear beautifully years later

and also ones as low as $150 at places like K&G- http://www.kgstores.com/

things to factor in- is he done growing, I wouldnt want to spend a lot on a suit if he'd grow out of it. But if he's pretty much hit the height he's going to be at, I might spend more so that it lasts for college and then interviews

talk to me about men's suits

growth: he had a small growth spurt early this past spring.

my first thought was macy's because that's where i bought XH an oscar de la renta suit and it was an amazing experience.

budget... i'm hoping to spend about $400. i'm willing to go an extra $100 if it's amazing and he loves it.

mostly, i want this to be a fun experience for him. i want him to be treated well... being measured and tailored properly. he's such a quiet kid and is always worried about me spending money... i want him to feel special as his senior year starts!

Got to Lord & Taylor or Macy's if you want your DS to have that great experience. Good quality as well.
Stay clear of Men's Wearhouse - I don't feel their clothing is the quality that it should be for the price and I absolutely hate how they try to sell you everything.

Try Men's Wearhouse. One person works with you to pick out a suit. A tailor fits him. They can leave material in the pants so if he grows they can let them down.

i was going to recommend K&G too. with the money left over from your budget, you can splurge on other things he may want. like a really NICE pair of mens dress shoes. that will probably last longer than the suit if he is still not done his growth spurt.

this - when they have sales you can get a good price.

For a teenager I would go to TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Burlington or Century 21. They grow, and there is zero sense in buying a $400 suit.

thank you!

we do get along pretty well.
not only do i love him because i do... but i also LIKE him. he's a lot of fun to spend time with. he's the best thing in my life.

the best part of all of this is that he had a good time and loves his new suit.

this kid hates shopping, and he really had a good time with the whole thing.

i know i'm going to cry the ugly cry the first time he wears it out!

also... thanks to everyone who helped me think this through. although i do have SO, there's just something about talking to other women/moms about decisions that affect our kids.

Its great you found something you liked without spending a ton of time shopping around. Next time you need a suite, lord and taylor is a good place to buy nice when they are on sale.
