Black suits for men

DH has to wear a black suit for a wedding he's in in a few weeks. He wants to rent one because he says that a black suit is not part of man's regular suit wardrobe. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to men's clothing, but was wondering what others (or others' DH's) thought about this.

As an added bonus, if you know of a place in NYC to rent black suits, we'd really appreciate your sharing!

My DH just got a black pin stripe suit. It looks really good on him too and gets compliments all the time. He got it from Men's Warehouse.

I thought most men had a black suit for special occasions.

Just to clarify: DH owns a tux, which he wears to formal events. He works in a law office and often wears suits to work, but says that the partners and other associates don't wear black suits.

ETA: I think the groom wants the groomsmen to wear plain black suits. DH has a couple of dark pinstripes, but apparently they don't 'suit'

Come to think of it - DH never would buy black either for work. He is in finance. He has navy and grays of all variations.

My DH doesn't own a plain black suit either - says it's like a funeral director.
He does have a black on black pinstripe that is georgeous though. But plain black, no way.

Hmmm....this is interesting. I posted this same question on thenest, and folks there seemed to think DH was crazy for not owning a black suit, but here there's more variation in replies. I wonder if it's a regional thing...

I worked for a investment firm a few years ago and now that I think about it, I didn't see very many men in black suits. If it was black it had pinstripes or some light pattern.

A black suit for work seems a little mob-ish to me. Or job-interveiwish. I think when a guy buys his first suit & doesn't know what to get, he gets black.

My father wore suite to work for years & never wore black.

A friend wore a black suit with a black shirt & a silver tie to my wedidng. I thought it was a little mobster, but he thougth it was spiffy.

I don't know where to rent suits, but if your DH buys one, he could wear it other weddings, but I can see him not wanting to where it to work.

DH bought a black suit before the holiday's - for a funeral. Definitely not a suit he'd wear to work (if he had to wear suits to work ;))...he might wear it to a wedding.

It's a nice suit - has some texture to it...but no pattern.

I work in finance and we all have to wear suits everyday. Every guy in here owns a black suit. I'd say they wear navy or gray more frequently, but they all own a black one. And black is also great for interviews - a great power suit! I think he should own one. Gray and navy may be more stylish but there are times when conservative is better.

My husband owns more than 1 black suit. You can wear them for work, funerals and even for a black tie optional affair. You could check out Syms in Commack on motor parkway. They sell designer stuff at a discount(womens stuff too) so he could get an inexpensive one that way if he doesn't wear it often it won't matter. They also do alterations there.

Thanks, everyone! He went and bought one today - it's not perfect, but he bought it at Syms, *and* they were having a sale, so he got a good deal.
