taking B6 or Bcomplex?
I only have a 10 day LP, which I know is kind of on the fence of being an LP defect. I have been using natural progesterone cream after O, and I was also thinking I might start taking extra B6 to help lengthen LP.
the prenatal I take now (Nature Made) has 2.6mg of b6 (it says its 104%) and 4mcg of B12 (50%).
how many mg of b6 should i be taking? what would be okay to take along with this prenatal? Or maybe i should just take a b-complex vitamin along with my prenatal??
also, i am on cd5. if i start taking it tomorrow, would it be effective for my current cycle, or does it take a couple months to 'kick in'?
i just wanted to see if any of you ladies have had any experience with this, and what you have done for it. thanks!

Re: taking B6 or Bcomplex?
This cycle I started taking an additional 100 mcg of B6. I also have a 10 day LP. I started taking it a few days into the cycle too so not sure how much of an effect it will have this month. I do think i've O'd earlier this month, but not sure if it's from that (I came off BCP in May, but my cycles are still regulating).
I posted a similar question last month and ppl told me it was safe to take the 100. I've read that it's recommended to take the B complex b/c you need the other B vitamins to absorb the B6, but since I already bought the B6, I'm going to see how this month goes and switch when I run out if I don't see any difference.
HTH! Good luck.
ETA: I take the additional B6 along with my prenatal.

I'm glad you posted this questions because I was wondering the same thing. I too have a 10 LP and began taking B6 at the start of this cycle. So B-complex is more effective people think? I'm wondering if I should put the B6 aside and pick up a B-complex instead?

Re: taking B6 or Bcomplex?
I've been taking B6 to help with my LP which has been 9 days, but it hasn't done anything.
I used to have an 11 day LP, sometimes 10 days. I've always been on the shorter side, but have been able to conceive 2 times. But now that we're TTC again, from 2-3 months in a row it has been only 9 days.
I used to take B-complex and then B6. I can't remember which one it was, but one of them extended my LP by only 1 day each month. I wish I could remember which one it was? Still, it isn't that much. That's why I'm trying Prometrium this month. I'll let you know how that goes.

Sorry to highjack but are you guys figuring this all out yourselves or you were told by a doctor?
If I am correct about my O date, and my cycle this month is typical - my LP is only 10 days as well.

Have you ever tried the over the counter progesterone creams? Do you know if they're safe? Effective? Good luck to you

I've just figured this out on my own, knowing when I ovulated and then seeing when AF arrives. Also my temps seem to go up and down after ovulation so I'm still trying to figure out if I have a progesterone issue or LPD. I figured by the end of this month if I don't get a BFP I will contact my dr.

Re: taking B6 or Bcomplex?
also wanted to share this info i found:
Luteal Phase Defect
The luteal phase of a woman’s menstrual cycle begins immediately after ovulation and continues for approximately 12 to 14 days. If the luteal phase lasts 10 days or less, it is considered a Luteal Phase Defect. Some doctors believe any luteal phase shorter than 12 days can cause problems. This shortened time period may not allow the uterine lining to develop enough for the embryo to fully implant, and often leads to an early miscarriage or a failure to conceive.
LPD occurs because of inadequate progesterone stimulation; it is a hormonal imbalance. You may discover a Luteal Phase Defect while charting your fertility. A time frame between ovulation and menstruation of less than 12 days may indicate an LPD. A doctor can discover an LPD with a simple blood test that detects progesterone levels in your body seven days after ovulation.
It is often treated with vitamin B6 and progesterone cream, which help lengthen the luteal phase. If over-the-counter treatments don’t work, a reproductive endocrinologist may prescribe Clomid or progesterone suppositories.

I'm going to just finish my bottle of B6 and then decide whether or not to switch to the complex. I was googling it and read people saying that you need the other B vitamins to help your body absorb B6 or something like that.

Re: taking B6 or Bcomplex?
I first read about this info on Fertility Friend and on here years ago and recently. But I did ask my doctor a few weeks ago and she said that B-complex might help. I did tell her that I've been taking 200mg of B6 for a while and it hasn't done anything and she seemed surprised. Maybe I should try the B-complex again, but that will make me worry about something else.
If I take a B-complex it has 400mcg of folic acid in it. And if I'm taking a prenatal with 800 mcg of Folic Acid in it too, I would think that, that would be too much Folic Acid, no?

Re: taking B6 or Bcomplex?
I'm pretty sure it's recommended to take 800-1200 mcgs of folic acid for TTC and pregnancy, so you should be fine. Anyone else know for sure?

Re: taking B6 or Bcomplex?
When I had both boys, 6 and 3 yrs old, I was only taking a prenatal with 400mcg of folic acid and that was it. No DHA supplements either. I didn't know anything about all the new things. More folic acid, DHA supplements, etc. So, now I have to change vitamins to one with 800mcg of folic acid (I'm still taking the same vitamin I used to take), a DHA supplement and possibly a B-complex vitamin. Changing vitamins I don't mind because mine are too expensive every month. I just don't like taking that many vitamins.

Hmm, I wonder if it's worth a shot trying then? Can I just buy it at any drugstore? I'm going to have to take a look the next time I'm in one. Thanks for the info!

My current pre-natal contains 1mg of folic acid and I always thought that's the most you should take in a supplement but I could be wrong. I just tried a google search but couldn't find any solid info. I can't see an extra 200mcgs doing much harm but I'm just not sure. Sorry I couldn't really help.

I actually wasn't able to find it in a drugstore... but i found it at a Whole Foods store. I think they are more available at health food stores.
Also, i read that if you are using the cream and you do end up getting PG, it's important to continue using the cream until at least the end of the first trimester or til your dr. says its ok.

Re: taking B6 or Bcomplex?
I usually see folic acid in terms of mcgs not mg so I'm not sure how many mcgs=1 mg? I guess when in doubt, def check with yout doc.

Sorry about that 1mg equals 1000mcgs.. and you're right, you should always consult with your dr. if in doubt. I'm actually thinking of using the progesterone cream but am thinking I should probably check with him first.
