switching pediatricians
my DS is only 4 months, but I feel like the pediatrician may not be the best for us. He came highly recommended from
many different people. however he told me to use sunblock on him (when it seems it shouldn't be used on babies under 6 months), is having him start solids (when it seems this isn't recommended til closer to 6 months). I also believe he's not tolerating the supplemental formula well. any suggestions on what to do? any recommendations for pediatricians in bellmore/merrick/east Meadow/wantagh? is it possible just to get a second opinion?

Supposedly pediatricians are starting to recommend sunblock earlier if sun is unavoidable. The benefit outweighs the risk.
Also the solids thIng, most pediatricians aren't up to date on the recent recommendations. They're generally not nutritionists and while I believe they should stay current, some are old school. Do what you feel comfortable doing. I had no problems telling my pediatrician that we were going To wait. She had no problems with that.
Pediatricians are also not well versed on car seat safety, especially the older ones.
I didn't always follow my pediatricians recommendations. I did my own research on things.
What made me switch peds was when they brushed off my daughters illness as just bronchiolitis and didn't test her for flu and rsv and she ended up nearly dying.

I Googled it because our Ped said you're not supposed to have a baby under 6 months in the sun at all, so there's no reason for sunscreen. If there is no way to avoid the sun, the baby should have sunscreen on.
The FDA seems to agree with what our Ped says:

Also, I know that formula fed babies are started on solids sooner. So between 4-6 months is fine. There's nothing wrong with getting a second opinion or finding a new Dr. if you don't like your current one, but it seems like your Dr. isn't suggesting anything out of the ordinary.

I absolutely love my pediatricians and I was told the same as you...under 6 months I was told to avoid sun but if I had to be in the sun I was to use sunblock because the benefit out weighed getting burned and my kids started oatmeal at four months then I added fruit to it a week later and by 5 months had every kind of fruit and veggie....obviously if you aren't comfortable with them you should switch but there is honestly nothing wrong with what they are advising you to do...my kids are 2 and 3 are are perfectly healthy little monsters...lol

Exactly this. My old pediatrician kept pushing me to try purees when ds1 was 5 months old, he didn't even know what was blw (although moms have been feeding their LOs actual solids since forever).
I switched to Dr Castiglia in Mineola, she was recommended to me from a lot of ppl.

They are recommendations. You do with the info what you want.
If you don't want to start solids don't. If you don't want sunscreen on your child then don't. The dr won't shun you if you don't follow their recommendations to a T.
But I will say I'd put sunscreen on a baby because a burn is way worse than any sunscreen out there.
As for solids. I started at 4 months but my dr said do what you want.

ITA with all of this! Started both my girls in solids at 4 months. They were both fall/winter babies but I think if they were spring babies I'd have felt more comfortable with sunscreen on them than not, although obv I'd try to shade them as much as possible. I don't think your peds recs are outrageous, perhaps a bit more old school, but you have to find someone whose views are in line with yours.

This. It is just recommendations. Do what you feel is best for your child. My DD was ready to start solids at 5 months. And i would definitely put sunscreen on a baby if they are going to be in the sun for awhile.

if you are not happy, switch. While I agree they are recommendations, I would say switch. I stayed with a ped for far to long. I was pissed every time I left there. I finally switched and have never looked back. I am so happy where I am now (OOS)

I agree with all this. I stayed with a ped I wasn't 100% happy with for almost TWO YEARS. We switched 7 months ago and I am THRILLED.
I'm in Oceanside so it's a but further but Beach Pediatrics is a truly amazing practice. Absolutely no complaints.

I made it 9 months with a pediatrician I started doubting around 3-4. He was awful/judgmental and his advice didn't at all align with my parenting philosophies. His practice got big (he published a book) and despite going for monthly well checks, he never even remembered who we were (which was the least of my issues with the practice).
If you're not happy, RUN. There will always be another doctor out there. Thankfully we did switch and it's like a completely different world where we are now. I love my ped and her staff. There are so many good peds out there, the one you don't like doesn't deserve your business.

I stayed with DD first Ped until she was 7 months old and the last straw came when he made a not so nice remark about her wieght. I moved immediatley. I am now with Dr. Kalenscher in Massapequa and could not be happier!
