Swimming with Nurse Sharks/Sting Rays?

Anyone ever done it? They have a place in DR where you can and it sounds pretty cool. But it also scares me a little. I've read up about both Sting Rays and Nurse Sharks and know that they are generally not aggressive towards people, but STILL it's a shark and the thing that killed Steve Irwin (my dog's namesake!) so I'm a little wary.

I swam with stingrays and sharks at Disney World Resort in Florida Typhoon Lagoon. Disney removed the barb. It was one of the best moments of my life.

I swam with sting rays on my honeymoon in Bora Bora and it was amazing! I was a little nervous doing it but I am so glad I did!

I've swam in open water (not a controlled environment) with sharks and stingrays...as well as moray eels (They freaked me out more to be honest!!) In my situation they didn't seem interested in us and kept their distance. I say go for it!

I wouldn't pay money to swim with those things.
I'd pay money to NOT swim with them.

Sounds like something people should try to avoid rather than seek out!

That's the other thing I was wary of- it's a natural habitat so it's open. Anything can come and go in there! Chat Icon I've fed stingrays before and they freaked me out a little, but it just sounds so cool. I'm going to try to convince DH.

Re: Swimming with Nurse Sharks/Sting Rays?

Ive done this in Bahamas and DR -- but it was in a enclosed area (they had underwater fences in the ocean so nothing else could get in ... and the sting rays couldnt get out). IT was combined with a snorkling trip --

I've done it - it's pretty great!

Less scary than swimming with used condoms and baby diapers on Coney Island IMO.

I scuba dive so I have been in areas with rays (all kinds) sharks (a few different kinds) crazy kinds of fish, turtles etc.

While it is scary at first in the open water like that they very rarely even come near you unless you feed them and I don't beleive in feeding them in the wild.

Yeah I don't think we'd even be allowed to feed them or that I would want to if I was in the water with them. lol!

if you are a good swimmer (i mean, good enough that you wont get freaked out and start splish/splashing when a shark is near you), do it!

i am NOT a good swimmer and im a bit freaked out about the idea of cage shark diving....but the fact that its a cage helps. if it was anything out in the open, i personally wouldnt do it...b/c i wouldnt trust my reaction

so i think it just depends how you are

This is a good point. Hmm I'm more of the freeze under pressure type rather than thrash in terror, so I think I'll be okay, especially now that I'm thinking about it. I still wanna do it!

I swam with the stingrays in Grand Cayman, and hated it. It just wasn't for me. I hated the feeling of them swimming around my legs and feet. I much preferred swimming with dolphins!

I have snorkeled with the sting rays in Grand Cayman and snorkeled in a cove in St Thomas and the guide was pointing out 2 nurse sharks. Those I kept my distance from - but we did get to feed the sting rays and they swim all around you in Grand Cayman - it was quite an experience.

I would do the sting rays again but not sure I would want to swim with sharks - whether they bother people or not.

Re: Swimming with Nurse Sharks/Sting Rays?

I did the swimming with nurse sharks and sting rays in DR, probably at the same place you did, and it was not at all scary. They are penned up and the nurse sharks do not get that close to you at all.. the sting rays do get close to you and you swim up to the point where u can stand and hold the sting ray for a photo opportunity. FM me if you have any questions.

Re: Swimming with Nurse Sharks/Sting Rays?

I've done both. We did the snorkeling with the sharks and rays at Typhoon Lagoon and we did a Stingray encounter (got t feed them, snorkel with them, etc) on our Disney cruise. They're really cool creatures. it's not scary. The sting rays I have done it with have been de-barbed, but they do tell you how to walk, etc so as not to step on a sting ray accidentally and scare it.

We swam with black tip reef sharks and stingrays in tahiti (moorea) on our HM. It was in open water and while a bit scary definitely memorable and exciting! I'd do it.

Here's an old pic I found in my shutterfly of how close they were:

I hated swimming with the stingrays! And so did my husband, and we both loved the dolpins.

Re: Swimming with Nurse Sharks/Sting Rays?

Personally I would never. BUT I'm not the biggest fan of sea creatures to begin with and I only swim in the ocean if I can see to the bottom. That being said, that's a big he!! no for me. But I know people who have done it and absolutely loved it, so I'd say yay!
