Swim Lessons

I know this topic has been exhausted, but I tried searching and didn't find anything....I want to put my (almost) 4 year old back in swim lessons. He did Saf-T-Swim in Bellmore for almost 2 years until I pulled him out a couple of months ago and still can't swim. I hate it there. There is no YMCA near me (Merrick). Is there any place someone can recommend that is good? TIA!

Re: Swim Lessons

We have been at saf-t-swim in Bellmore for a year as well and he's also not swimming yet. I have heard awesome things about the swim lessons at World Gym in Wantagh. I heard it costs a little more than Saf-t-swim but heard it was worth it. I called last year and they don't start until 3 yrs old and he was only turning two, that's why we didn't go there. They use the Red Cross program, I'm pretty sure that's what the YMCA uses as well. I called the director last year to discuss the program and she said they only do one on one and they aren't packed into the pool with 20 other lessons going on at the same time like at saf-t-swim which I can't stand. I hate how they have so many lessons and the instructors and the kids bump into each other all the time. Also, the older kids swimming laps, the instructors aren't really showing them or teaching them, they don't pay attention to the kid or their form while they try and swim laps but instead talk to the other instructors which are all pretty young so they talk to each other during the lessons and have young people events like lacrosse season and what not so a lot of times you need to switch instructors after you finally find someone you like because their schedule changed. I heard world gym doesn't hire the young kids for those two reasons.

Re: Swim Lessons

NYSC in Hicksville. My son is almost 5 and can jump off the diving board and make it to the wall. He does get tired, and if he wasn't so curious about what others were doing, he would be great! I highly recommend Stephanie there. ALSO, NYSC in Hicksville is not Saf T Swim but the one in East Meadow is. Just a FYI!

Re: Swim Lessons

Thanks for the info guys!!

and i hated Sat-T-Swim for the same reasons.

1. the instructors talk to each other more than they pay attention to my kid

2. the quality of education they gave was something I could have done if i had a pool

3. it was so crowded DS kept watching everyone else

4. they changed instructors so often and my son doesn't warm up to people easily

5. one instructor they stuck him with yelled and SHOOK him in the pool because she couldn't get him to stop crying. When i went in there to confront her shes like...well he was pulling on my bathing suit. i could have drowned her.

yeah i would not recommend them. but then my nephew still goes there and he actually has a good teacher and he's improving. i guess it's hit or miss, but with the ages of the teachers the turn around is horrible. one teacher had to take off for a month to study for exams.

DS did level 1 and 2 here. The lifeguards teach the classes and the classes were big but you get what you pay for and it was very convenient for me. I am going to try and get him in for the next session now that he is a better swimmer.

He just finished a set of 6 lessons @ safeTswim in Bellmore and he loved it and did great. He needed the one on one to really learn BUT he is 9yo and he clicked with his instructor.
Personally I would not put a toddler or young child in lessons there because of the crowding and I don't like that the child can't see their parent. I feel so bad when I see a little guy crying the entire lesson scared of the water, in a strangers arms, who are all these people, where is my Mommy UGH I just don't see how a little guy is going to learn anything.

I don't know if it's too far for you but we go to NYSC at the outlets in Deer Park. Very happy with them and my DS has learned so much there.

Same here Chat Icon

I've had my moments of "Should we take a break", but, after yesterdays lesson, we are definitely continuing.

Very happy there and I really like DS' instructor. All the instructors seem to be great! They let you schedule makeups when needed too, which is great and helpful so your child is not missing anything.

Re: Swim Lessons

I am so surprised! Carlie has been at bellmore since 1 years old and can swim the length of the pool, do back floats and now learning the back stroke!

I def think it is the instructor though, I have kept her with the same instructor the entire time (and even signed up our new baby in Jan with him)

I WOULD NEVER STAND WHAT HAPPENED WITH IAN THOUGH! OMG!

I can't recommend anywhere else but I was so surprised to read this about Bellmore Chat Icon
