Re: Suntan Lotion and Newborns
You are not supposed to use under 6 months. If you want to, I would ask the ped.

My ped recommended using sunscreen at four months if we were going to be in the sun because dd is so fair. She recommended using blue lizard.

Re: Suntan Lotion and Newborns
I posted this on another sunscreen thread...there was a story on CNN a few weeks ago, by Dr. Sanjay Gupta. He basically cited that any product with oxybenzone is very hazardous to our health - it can leach into your bloodstream and is a know carcinogen.
Unfortunately, Banana Boat is what I was using on my kids, and its one of the worst! This is VERY difficult b/c most sunscreens contain stuff that can be harmful...but, this site (posted below) "rates" the products, based on what's in them.
Check it out - and remember, nothing is perfect, but you can find something that is less harmful.
I just ordered TruKid face sticks from TruKid.com and California Baby from Target.com. Also, Blue Lizard Baby has a pretty low risk rating, and you can find that at CVS.

I just looked up Blue Lizard on that site. I bought the Sensitive because I couldn't find the Baby. I wound up finding the Baby and bought it also. I checked the ingredients to see which one to use. They are both the same WORD FOR WORD. Both active and inactive. I wonder why they recieved different ratings?

That is weird. I actually compared the ingredients of blue Lizard sensitive and Blue Lizard Baby sensitive in the store and the ingredients were the same. The baby one was just smaller and the same price, so I just bought the sensitive one.

Re: Suntan Lotion and Newborns
Technically, it is a no no for babies under six months. BUT my ped told me that it was better to use it then to have a baby in the sun with no protection and he recommened Waterbabies.

I went for Chloe's 2 month checkupyesterday andI asked him about suntanlotion and he said the same thing as your doctor.
The APA recommends at 6 months so try to keep the little ones shaded if not then he rather us use it than npthing at all.
Also, test it on your child's back first befor eyou use it all over to make sure there is no reaction.

I also wanted to add that last summer at 11 weeks, DS went to Montauk and went to hte beach with me, he wore a shirt, bathing suit and a hat and sunblock and he didn't get an ounce of color. Same for Florida when he was 3 months old and the cruise we took when he was 8 months old.
I just feel it is better to have it on them.
