Suggestions please...updated 1/29

My yorkie Bruno will be 8 this year.
Last month he had a horrible weekend of vomiting and no bowel movements and he was barely moving around.
The vet took x-rays and saw stool that looked to be on its way out.
His blood and other samples all came back normal except for a slight fever and the radiologist said his liver was the tiniest bit enlarged.
Bruno was put on meds and a prescription wet food for a week.
He seemed fine.

This weekend the vomit started again.
He was walking very slowly but by Sunday he started perking up again.
He was not eating but was drinking and all bodily functions were working.
On Monday he ate and seemed more like himself after we gave him some wet food (he usually only gets dry prescription good for the urinary tract food).
Yesterday he vomited a few times but was playing with his toys acting like his crazy self.
He did jump on our bed & couch it seemed cautiously.

Last night I was feeling all around him because the slow jumps worried me.
I felt an egg size mass and could see it when I put him on his back.

He is at the vet now on an IV.
He had an ultrasound which was not definitive for the pancreatitus the vet suspected.
The x-rays were also repeated and he just sees fluid there.
The vet first said Bruno will need to be opened up so they can see what the mass is at a hospital.
He wanted to know if they saw a tumor if they should euthanize.

I want to know what and where exactly the mass is before I try to decide what to do next.
Now the vet said he can do a biopsy tomorrow & would get the results Monday.

I can't even think straight.
Do you think waiting for a biopsy is wise or just getting to the surgeon is better?
The vet says he doesn't feel good about the mass and doesn't think it's just an absess.
Is there something else we should be doing?
I feel so helpless and confused.
We scheduled the biopsy for tomorrow.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Re: Suggestions please...

if you do the biopsy then you will know what ur dealing with prior to surgery. If it really bad( hopefully not) surgery might not be worth it, its gonna be painful. However it can tell if its treatable and the prognosis wether its good or bad. i hope that helps? I;m a critical care veterinary nurse at livs if you have any more questions feel free to fm me.

Re: Suggestions please...

I think you're doing the right thing getting a biopsy. After you find out what it is, you can decide how to approach dealing with it - and it can't hurt to get a 2nd opinion, as the other ladies suggested.

Re: Suggestions please...

Thanks for your opinions.

The vet had to make a larger incison to biopsy and saw that the mass was attached from his abdomen and then intertwined with his intestines.
It's the size of a lemon and is blocking his kidney which the vet said he could do without but that wouldn't solve the intestine problem.
He's leaning towards putting him down.
Hopefully a vet that many of my friends have used will be calling my vet to weigh in being that we can't take Bruno yet.
I don't want to torture my baby but I don't want to give up so quickly either.
He's 12 pounds so I'm having a hard time swallowing there's a mass the size of a lemon in there.
Thanks for reading.

Re: Suggestions please...updated Thurs., Fri.

My big boy is coming home in a few hours.
My vet faxed Bruno's info to the vet my friends/family have used.
By that info, he agreed that it doesn't look good.
We're waiting for the biopsy results and we'll decide how to proceed.
At least he's coming home for the weekend.

Any updates on Bruno?Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes!!!
Things are hopefully looking up.
Bruno was acting loopy over the weekend but he was on pain meds.

The surgeon in Brooklyn that we wanted to take him to said things seemed too far along for him to help.

We called the Center for Specialized Veterinary Care in Westbury and they said they would see him on Tuesday.

They physically checked him out and wanted to do another ultrasound because the copy of the ultrasound & x-rays that we had already weren't showing much.

Dr. Gayle said she doesn't see a tumor so far!!!!!!!!
It might just be fat & fluid from Bruno having the most severe form of pancreatitis.
Many of his organs are inflamed and may be pressing against each other.
Part of his intestines looks corrugated.
He also has some bladder stones back even though he's been on his prescription food.
The food might have caused the problems he's having now because while it's good for the urine, it's high in fat which is bad for the pancreas.

Bruno will be switched to a different prescription food and they'll see what results that'll bring.
If the stones keep coming back they may re-route his urine to come out lower near his scrotum so he can pass stones more easily.

It's a wait and see type thing but he's home and seems happier alreadyChat Icon .

Thank you everyone!
